August 12, 2020
Dear Village Resident,
If you've answered the 2020 Census, thank you! Spring Grove ranks #71 in the whole country for a response rate of 87.5%! The Census Bureau has announced that census data collection will be complete by September 30, one month earlier than the previous deadline which presents worries that our state will be under-counted and, subsequently, lose federal funding. If all Illinoisans are not counted, fewer federal resources will come back to our state. If you, or someone you know, hasn't responded yet, please respond by mail, phone, or online! View 2020Census.gov, for more information and to start the census. Official census takers will start knocking on doors soon to offer assistance in completing the 2020 Census. Remember, all Census responses are kept confidential. It’s the law.

It Only Works if You Wear It
Every day we do things that keep us safe, like buckling a seat belt or putting on a bike helmet. But if we forget, or don’t do them (even once), we put ourselves and others at risk. A mask is no different. It only works if you wear it. So always wear a mask (correctly) when you’re out in public to protect yourself and others.
Voting Options for November 3 General Election

Due to COVID-19, voters are encouraged to cast a ballot prior to Election Day, either by mail or during early voting. McHenry County has sent out a Vote by Mail Ballot application to registered voters. You can also request a ballot from them here. Register to vote or check your registration status here.
COVID-19
Currently, Spring Grove and the rest of McHenry & Lake County is in Phase 4 of Restore Illinois. The Illinois Dept. of Public Health recently said 11 counties are considered to be at a warning level but not McHenry or Lake County. Continue to take precautions to keep COVID-19 from spreading by staying home if you don't feel well and remember the 3 Ws:

  • Wear a Mask or Face Covering whenever you're in a public setting
  • Watch your Distance - Stay at least 6 feet from people who are not from your household, in both indoor and outdoor spaces
  • Wash your Hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

View current stats on McHenry County COVID-19 cases. If you have health questions about COVID-19, call the hotline at 800-889-3931 or email questions here. The Village Municipal Centre is open with normal hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. You are encouraged to conduct as much business as possible online.
Blast from the Past - Nippersink Creek School
Education in Spring Grove began in the early 1800s within a one room log structure called Nippersink Creek School. Mr. Sterns taught 15 students during a two-term school year with classes running from April thru June and October through February.

The log structure burned down in 1882 and was replaced by this one-room frame schoolhouse at the northeast corner of Wilmot Road and Main Street on what was known as Cole's Corners. The photo of the school building is from 1906, so had been standing 24 years by that time. The teacher and students photo is from 1905. The cute souvenir is dated September 3, 1900 - May 26, 1901 presented by teacher, Bessie Stone and lists quite a large student body of 42 students. Many of the names are familiar in Spring Grove history.

In August 1925, the old landmark school was torn down. It was reported that the residents of Spring Grove, "a good many of whom received their education there", would miss the old familiar building. A bungalow was built on the spot shortly thereafter and still occupies the corner today.
