Blast from the Past - August Huff & Mary Smith

August Huff and Mary Smith were married on October 19, 1892 in Johnsburg. The newlyweds first farmed in the Richmond area until 1901 when they purchased the old Wagner homestead for $5,600. The home on Sunset Road survived all these years and although an addition was added, you can still see remnants of the original house.

They had seven children, two of which passed away in infancy. The remaining children were Willie, George, Katherine, Joseph, and Julia. Four of them married spouses with the last name of Freund, with two of the Freunds being siblings. (Augusts' mother was also a Freund).

Pictured is son William on his wedding day and shows the shift in wedding attire from 1892 when his parents got married to1915. Mary Ann Freund, wore a beautiful dress "of yellow chiffon taffeta and carried yellow tea roses" in contrast to the darker and more formal look of Mary Smith's dress.

August and Mary lived a life dedicated to family and community, but no life is without bumps and bruises along the way. One day in 1915, a "stranger" by the name of John Hauff came by the farm. August said he rode up to the farm in a single horse-drawn buggy, got out of the buggy, turned the horse loose and left. August didn't know it, but John had just stolen the rig in McHenry. The horse's owner was soon on the trail of the thief and John "was located in a saloon at Spring Grove". He got a ride back to McHenry, placed under arrest, and was locked up in the village jail. An hour later he was found dead, having hung himself with his linen necktie. Hauff, 38, had been seen wandering around McHenry all week looking for work; his last employment was in Spring Grove.

In 1928, August had his own brush with death in a serious accident while driving home with Albert Pepping after purchasing a load of apples. They were just east of town at a narrow turnpike near a bridge when the Ford truck Albert was driving careened down an 18-foot embankment into a ditch below. They were pinned underneath, unconscious, until Pepping's son, who showed superhuman strength, raised the truck so the men could be pulled out. They both had serious injuries and were under doctors care for a few days afterwards.

Mary Huff died young, at age 45, in 1918. August retired from farming around 1942 and made his home with his daughter, Julia, and her husband, Joseph Freund in Spring Grove. He died in 1945.
