Hollywood Hospital Hit By Ransomware Attack!

Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, a hospital in Hollywood, Los Angeles has declared an internal emergency last week, as the computer systems were shut down due to a cyber attack, disrupting day-to-day operations.
  • The computer systems have been locked up with ransomware for over a week and the staff is unable to pull up any patient records.
  • The attacker demanded an exorbitant 9,000 bitcoin, which is roughly 3.6 million dollars, to unlock the computers.
  • If bitcoins are sent to them electronically, then in exchange, the hackers would send back the key codes to restore the system.
  • As computers are forbidden to be switched on, staff can not access emails, patients can not get x-rays, CT-scans, lab work or other digital records.
  • Besides the FBI, the LAPD and a cyber forensic team are investigating the ransomware attack.
Cyberthieves Have A New Target: Children!

Children under age 19 are a small but growing set of identity  theft victims.  Cyberthieves target children because their identities offer a clean slate with which to apply for bank accounts, credit cards or loans, government benefits and tax breaks.  Criminals will usually combine a child's Social Security number with a  fake date  of birth  and  address to avoid suspicion.  Families often find out a child's identity  was stolen when applying for college loans or scholarships, or after tax returns are filed in the child's name.  The onus is on parents to detect thefts of their children's identities.
  • How can parents protect their children from identity theft?
  • What are the warning signals that your child's identity may have been stolen?
  • How should you react to your child's data breach?
  • What should parents know about monitoring their children's credit records?
Documents Leaked Following U.S. Police Union Hack!

Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), which is the largest police union in the United States, representing more than 325,000 sworn law enforcement officers organized in 2,100 local chapters, was breached this month.
  • The attacker gained access to all of the organization's records, which resulted in the official FOP website being shut down.
  • Hundreds of documents were stolen from the system and were leaked online.
  • Hacker allegedly got 18TB of data from FOP and provided it to UK based researcher and activist.
  • Researcher and Activist Thomas White, who claimed the data was provided to him by an anonymous source, received death threats due to leaking the data, and claims that the purpose of the leak is to have corruption and other wrongdoing exposed.
  • Authorities in the United States have reportedly launched an investigation into the matter.
