Cybersecurity and the Real Estate Agent

The Marriott Corporation just announced that hackers stole information on as many as 500 million guests over a four year period, obtaining credit card and passport numbers and other personal data. This is clearly one of the biggest data breaches in history. In 2017 the Equifax breach affected more than 145 million people... Clearly this type of crime has become the new norm in our society and as a result, it is no longer a question of "if" you become a victim, it is now a question of "when" your office systems are disabled as a result of these "cyber-criminals."

Traffic Counts Added to RPR Commercial Reports

RPR is excited to announce practitioners now have the option to include traffic counts in RPR Commercial Property and Trade Area Reports. The data will display actual historical counts as well as Kalibrate's projected counts, which are based on the last published traffic count, local area trend data and up-to-date demographic information.  Commercial real estate pros can use the new data to i dentify and understand traffic patterns and historical trends.

Real Estate Technology
Perhaps the most prescient scene in the futuristic 1960s cartoon "The Jetsons" was when George, the eager technophile, had to run as fast as he could to stay on a newfangled treadmill gone haywire.
It's an apt metaphor for some technology today, particularly in the real estate industry, which is quick to jump on the newest disruptive innovation, but often ends up with the next Bluetooth-enabled toaster instead.

Realtors® See Increase in Commercial Income and Sales Volume for Second Straight Year
Commercial real estate markets are on the rise, with Realtors® specializing in commercial real estate reporting both an increase in members' gross income and sales volume, according to the National Association of Realtors® 2018 Commercial Member Profile. Corresponding to tightened inventory conditions, sales transactions for NAR's commercial members have slowly decreased in the last two years, down from eight in 2016 to seven in 2017.

Millennials: All We Want for Christmas is a New Home

Millennials are more likely to bolt, rather than build, from their homes.
Open Listings, an online homebuying platform, recently conducted a survey of 500 homeowners between 25 and 64 years old.
Roughly half of the participants owned their home for at least 10 years, a third of those surveyed owned for five years or less, and the remaining percentage had their homes between six to 10 years.

Help Sellers Make Informed Money Moves

How your sellers react to that first offer determines so much about their eventual home-sale satisfaction. But most of them aren't sales pros. Help them to act with confidence (and smarts!) with these articles on reviewing offers and negotiating from the REALTOR® Content Resource.

5 Tricks to Keep Your Pipes from Exploding This Winter

New homeowners may have heard that winterization is important, but in the hubbub of your first year living in a home you own (finally!), it can be easy to overlook the need to prepare for the cold weather ahead. After all, it's just not something renters deal with; prepping pipes for winter is often the landlord's job.  Ideally, you should winterize your pipes in the fall, before winter seriously sets in. But if you've forgotten and all of a sudden you're in the middle of a deep freeze, there's still time to prevent disaster.

The Best Ice Skating Rinks in NYC

The first harbinger of the holiday season in New York City is ice skating. The city's many outdoor rinks open to the public earlier and earlier every year, with the first few welcoming skaters at the beginning of October-yes, really. (Damn you, seasonal creep!)
And now that there's truly a chill in the air, the time feels right to lace up a pair of skates and start practicing some pirouettes. And would-be skaters aren't limited to the tourist-clogged rinks in Manhattan: there are plenty of less crowded places to skate in the outer boroughs, including a pretty little outdoor rink in Staten Island.

Foreign Investors Find Trophy Assets in Unlikely U.S. Goldmines
U.S. properti es in places like Denver, Phoenix, Philadelphia , and the suburbs of Atlanta have all drawn foreign investment this year as buyers look for growth outside the biggest U.S. metro areas.
Canadian investors topped the list of foreign buyers of U.S. real estate this year, as they have for a decade. Among those was Toronto-based Starlight Investments, which purchased apartment complexes in the suburbs of Atlanta and Phoenix through its U.S. fund.

Leverage Your Local Data for Global Impact
Data is a powerful tool, with infinite real estate applications. First and foremost, you can use data to evaluate properties, prices, current inventory, and local market trends. After all, whether your clients are buying or selling, their top priority is getting the best price.
However, many other types of data also play a role in shaping your practice. As a global agent, you can use data and market insights to pinpoint global opportunities in your market.
