2019 SIBOR/SIMLS LEADERSHIP

We want to thank the more than 450 SIBOR members who responded to the satisfaction survey that was distributed over the last two weeks. It was an overwhelming response.

The purpose of the survey was to inform the 2019 officers and directors of SIBOR and the SIMLS who met last week, along with key members of the staff, to plan for the coming year. The survey results were to a great extend the dominating input to the resulting strategic plan that is still be formulated.

The Leadership retreat is an annual event for all officers and directors. It is held off of Staten Island and is facilitated by professional industry consultants.

NAR'S ROADMAP
NAR Adopts Business-Oriented Strategic Framework

The NAR Board of Directors-led by 2018 President Elizabeth Mendenhall-adopted a five-year strategic framework to provide a more visionary, holistic, and business-oriented approach reflective of NAR's expanding role in technology and other arenas critical to real estate.
"The new strategic framework represents a common focus and direction for NAR leaders, volunteers, and staff," Heather Ozur, chair of the Strategic Thinking Advisory Committee, told the Board.

TECHNOLOGY
Just Say "Staten Island Real Estate"

The Staten Island Board of REALTORS® (SIBOR) has selected Voiceter Pro to be the provider of its voice-driven real estate listings search on Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant devices.
By saying "Alexa, Open Staten Island Real Estate" or "Hey Google, talk to Staten Island Real Estate," consumers can have a conversation with their favorite personal assistant, who will guide them through their search of home listings.
Free to use, consumers can specify their desired location, price range, number of bedrooms and other information to find homes that meet their needs

Library of Congress Makes Thousand of Materials FREE to Use

The history of the venerable Library of Congress demonstrates the vast importance that the founders of the U.S. accorded to reading and studying. It may be one of the country's most durable institutions, "the oldest federal cultural institution in the nation," it proclaims. While partisan rancor, war, and violence recur, the LoC has stolidly held an ever-increasingly diverse collection of artifacts sitting peacefully alongside each other on several hundred miles of shelves, a monument to the life of the mind that ought to get more attention.

NEW YORK NEWS
Agenda 2019: State and City Policy Tests

The voting machines are back in storage, the "Vote Here" signs are gone, and politics in New York have entered the interregnum between Election Day and the start of the new term in Albany, when a newly-Democratic State Senate and a re-elected Democratic Assembly majority and Democratic governor will begin to set the direction of the Empire State in 2019 -- while a new Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives vies with a Republican U.S. Senate and President Trump over where and how to steer the nation.

Most New Yorkers Are Shut Out of Buying a Home

STATEN ISLAND DEVELOPMENT
3 Major Changes to Staten Island's West Shore

The wheels on this endeavor have officially come off.   The developers of the New York Wheel announced on Tuesday that the 630-foot Ferris wheel will not be built.
"After years of planning, the developers of The New York Wheel announce, with great disappointment, that the dream of building a world class attraction in Staten Island will unfortunately not come to fruition," Cristyne Nicholas, spokesperson for The New York Wheel, said in a statement.

Fresh Kills Park Remediation and Restoration

For the past two years, NYC Parks staff have partnered with the College of Staten Island (CSI) and the Interstate Environmental Commission (IEC) to monitor the water quality within Freshkills Park and study the health of the waterways. This year's results were consistent with data from last year, which shows great progress in the remediation and restoration of the park.

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES
Why Foreign Investors Favor U.S. Real Estate

Global Atlanta: Atlanta is experiencing a real-estate boom at the moment, especially in town. How much of that is fueled by foreign capital, and how much of the higher pricing we're seeing is due to their influence?
Abe Schear: Atlanta is very much on the radar of international investors who are very active on the buy side and, to a bit lesser extent, on the sell side. This has for certain been a factor in reduced cap rates (and higher prices). Of course, we are also seeing significant interest for large institutional investors who have in some cases been under contract to buy projects well before they are completed.
