MANUFACTURING WORKFORCE TO BE STRENGTHENED WITH NEW ATC
A world-class Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is being built in Gurnee. After evaluating the workforce and economic needs in Lake County, the college developed plans for a center of advanced manufacturing excellence to provide industry-relevant career pathways in early 2022. The ATC serves as the catalyst to propel our region further into the forefront of modern, global technologies through innovative workforce development initiatives.

NEW PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM TRAINS FOR THE FUTURE
Launching fall 2021 at Southlake Campus, the pharmacy technician certificate program will prepare students to face the challenges of a quickly evolving career field while also helping employers fill a growing demand for the position. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the field will grow by four percent over the next decade. However, pharmacy technician program director Dr. Derek Leiter, who has been in the pharmacy field for 15 years, believes it will be much higher.

GET INTO THE PERFORMING ARTS THIS SPRING
One of Oscar Wilde's funniest plays, several art exhibitions, the annual Fear No Art Festival and Salute to Gospel Music Concert will all take place during spring semester. Plans are being made for each to be both free and virtual. Get your steady stream of arts beginning January and continuing into April.

FINE DINING AT A CASUAL PRICE WITH AN EDUCATIONAL FOCUS
Though it’s winter now, things will be heating up once the hospitality and culinary management program moves to the vacant Brae Loch Golf Club facility, thanks to a new partnership with the Lake County Forest Preserves.

CLC Board of Trustees Chair Dr. William M. Griffin said, “This is such a wonderful partnership for the betterment of our student learning, and also leverages a wise use of finances for both CLC and the Forest Preserves. We look forward to opening this facility and having the Lake County community enjoy many delicious meals in our student-run restaurant.”
WAUKEGAN STUDENT WINS NATIONAL SINGING COMPETITION
Imagine being flown to Los Angeles and working every day from seven in the morning to ten at night while trying to squeeze in a college class. That’s exactly what 21-year-old Francisco (Danny) Rea experienced during the month of November while studying at CLC. What’s more, Rea has been declared one of five winners on Estrella TV’sTengo Talento, Mucho Talento.” It’s a dream come true for the Waukegan-based musician whose singing career began long before his appearance on the competition.

ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY INTERNSHIP AND CAREER FAIR
COVID-19 can’t stop the 5th Annual Engineering & Technology Internship and Career Fair from taking place on Friday, Jan. 8. The event, which is hosted by the college's Career and Job Placement Center, will allow students and other jobseekers to meet with multiple employers from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. without leaving their homes because, as you may expect, the yearly gathering has gone virtual.

PILOT PROGRAM CONTINUES CRAFTING A STUDENT-READY CLC
The college will indeed be open this spring with a mix of class types available for students such as: online live via Zoom, online anytime, in-person and blended. Spring 2021 registration is already well underway, and students who begin their CLC education this semester have the chance to participate in, and inform the design of, a new class called College Success Seminar (CLC 120).

VISUAL IMPAIRMENT NOT A BARRIER TO LEARNING WITH APP
The college's first strategic pillar is access and success, which focuses on creating a student ready environment. To that end, the Office for Students with Disabilities is continually searching for ways to help students gain information which may otherwise be out of their reach or ability. Their latest investment to help student success is an app named Aira.

VIRTUAL CELEBRATION OF
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
In most years the community is called to celebrate the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day “on”, not a day off, and volunteer their time in honor of the civil rights leader. Unfortunately, the 2021 holiday is unable to be celebrated the same due to safety concerns related to COVID-19. The day will not pass without recognition, however, and at least one tradition will continue: a dramatic storytelling of Dr. King’s life and impact on human and civil rights by Marcus Gentry.

STUDENT SELECTED FOR SILENT SERVICE AWARD
The stories of those who serve often go unsung. Local news rarely leads with a person’s positive impact on the world around them. That is exactly why the Peter R. Marsh Foundation created the Silent Servant award to recognize “private citizens who selflessly and quietly serve others are indeed the most valuable citizens of their communities.” Among this year’s student award recipients is first-year CLC student Asharia Harris.

COLLEGE CREDIT AND ACADEMIC ENGLISH LEARNING SIDE-BY-SIDE
Having a firm grasp on academic level reading and writing in English is a requirement to graduate from college, but it doesn’t have to be a barrier to enrolling. The accelerated learning program allows those who were previously required to take a pre-college English class to instead start earning college credit.

LAKE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT REGISTERING COMMUNITY MEMBERS FOR VACCINATIONS
Lake County’s COVID-19 vaccination registration portal, AllVax, went live last week. This portal helps individuals identify when and where they can get vaccinated. In the first four days an incredible 100,000 individuals registered in this system.

The county health department is asking for help to reach all of their community members. Certain populations, especially communities of color, immigrant communities and communities with low health and digital literacy, have serious fears, concerns and hesitancies towards getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
