Kashkari calls for lower rates amid rising unemployment
Despite the second rate cut this year, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashari doesn’t think the Fed is going far enough.
“My message is clear: we should be supporting the economy, not tapping the brakes on the economy so I want to look at the data over the next few months but so far I am happy that we’re cutting interest rates,” Kashkari said during an event in Prior Lake.
That declaration comes amid news that Minnesota’s unemployment rate has ticked up recently, causing some minor ripples of concern. The state’s unemployment rate was 3.3 percent in August, a half percentage point higher than a year earlier.
Despite those concerns, Minnesota’s labor market remains complex and mixed: two-thirds of Minnesota employers saw modest growth over the summer, and staffing offices largely were bullish about third-quarter prospects.
