News and Photos

Last month our members visited the Pulse Exhibit at the Hirshhorn Museum - - thanks to Steve Shapiro for the atmospheric photos.

This month, Karin Price organized a w onderful tour of the U.S. Institute of Peace . Group photo by  Ann-Louise Colgan of USIP.

Karin also organized a tour of Glenstone for us this month - enjoy this "sneak peek" photo she took:

The Special Events Committee is always looking for more people to help organize tours - if you're interested, please email Chair Kris McLaughlin via the office:

An Invitation from the Academic Programs Committee (APC)

We Know YOU Know People!

Join us in a Brainstorming Session

Help us identify country-specific course ideas,  Global Hot Spots presenters,  and international topics of interest.
We know that you, our fellow members, like courses on countries and regions of the world as much as we do. You like political and historical looks at specific cultures. You like topics of international interest.

If you have thoughts and names, the Academic Programs Committee wants you!

We are looking for former employees who want to share course ideas and names of possible instructors. We're especially hoping that you will join in the discussion if you are a recent retiree from:
  • Department of State
  • Agency for International Development
  • Central Intelligence Agency
  • United Nations
  • Consulting groups
  • NGOs
All are welcome!

Meet-up: Monday, May 6, 1:00 - 2:30 PM

Place: Founders Hall at Mason - lounge in front of the Information Desk

Questions: Contact Barbara Spangler, APC Chair, by emailing the office:

Connecting Friends with Encore Learning

We're often referred to as the "best kept secret in Arlington." New members join mostly because they hear about Encore Learning from a friend.  When joining online, new members may enter a "Referred by" name. We look forward to thanking you here in the newsletter - see below.

Bring friends to our  "Encore Learning Presents" series at Arlington Central Library. These lectures and films are open to the public and a great way for prospective members to learn more about us. Details can always be found in our list of upcoming  Special Events.

Share on social media. When you simply like our Facebook page or share our Facebook posts and events to your social network, it's a huge help.

Photos, Photos, Photos...

We all love looking at them and it seems we can never get enough here in the office. Please share your photos of Encore Learning activities with us. The higher the resolution of the photo, the better (1 MB or higher). Shots taken on your mobile phone are great! Just email them to us and if we use your photos, we will make sure to acknowledge you as the photographer. We can't use thumbnails, though, so please check your photo size settings prior to emailing.
