Occupational health and safety awareness survey
As you may know MCA is in the process of building a series of safety related courses that are scheduled to be presented in early 2019. To design the materials specifically to you, the mechanical contractor, please take two minutes to complete a survey on occupational health and safety awareness.

Prompt payment
On Tuesday, September 25 Terry Milot, ATCC Chairman and MCA Executive Director, Russ Evans, met with Service Alberta Minister, Brian Malkinson in order to discuss the next steps toward achieving prompt payment legislation in Alberta. The postcard Minister Malkinson is holding in this photo is ATCC's postcard calling for action on Prompt Payment!

After meeting with Minister Malkinson, the ATCC sent this follow up letter . As well, on October 2 the Alberta Construction Association (ACA) and Alberta Trade Contractors Coalition (ATCC) sent this letter .

Courses year-round
Please visit our events calendar for a full listing of education courses happening during the remainder of 2018 as well as 2019. These programs are designed for owners, senior management, service managers, technicians, HR leaders, frontline field staff and office staff to keep you current and grow your career.
Over the past year, MCA has been running training sessions in Calgary specifically for our Gold Standard Program service technicians. With help from our suppliers and manufacturers, we delivered monthly evening programs focused on troubleshooting techniques, maintenance tips, and hands on training designed to broaden service technician knowledge on specific products.

MCA is planning to begin this ‘product specific’ training in Edmonton and we are seeking your input and assistance. We are also seeking sponsorship of MCA’s Ethical Best Practices for Service Technicians training course that will be held December 3, 2018. Read more here .

Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board opportunity
The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board is looking for a new board member to represent  employers in the designated trades, who will make a positive impact on the future of Alberta’s diverse skilled trades workforce. 

The attached FAQ form indicates the overall functions of the board, the duties of its members, and the criteria used to select qualified people. Candidates who are interested in applying for a position on the board must submit their application online as well as provide letters of reference from within the industry. The closing date for this competition is  October 18, 2018.

Certification and recertification courses
SAIT - School of Construction's continuing education courses now include certification and recertification courses focused on cross connection (also known as backflow prevention). SAIT’s highly experienced instructors lead these hands on courses, which provide training to qualify and re-certify you as a cross connection control specialist.

Safety - Priority One
Focused inspection programs – Government of Alberta
This fall, OHS will conduct focused inspections in order to:

  • protect workers’ OHS rights
  • enhance employers’ awareness of their responsibilities
  • raise awareness of work site hazards
  • increase compliance with OHS laws.

The priorities and timeframes for focused inspections will be announced, but individual work sites will not be identified in advance. Click  here  for more information.

Cannabis legalization in Alberta  
Learn the   rules and regulations that will come into effect when the federal government legalizes recreational cannabis on Oct. 17, 2018.
Drug and alcohol policy development
Canada’s changing cannabis laws, along with existing legislation for medical use, make for a complicated landscape in the employment context.

This course is designed to support employers with developing a comprehensive drug and alcohol policy (not just a cannabis policy).

Join us October 15 to take a deep dive into cannabis outlining employer/employee obligations, the duty to accommodate and safety sensitive positions.
