UCP Government initiates Prompt Payment and Adjudication Review
Last month Service Alberta Minister, Nate Glubish announced that his department will be conducting a broad industry review of the need for prompt payment and adjudication processes. They will be hosting four by invitation only sessions, 2 in Edmonton and 2 in Calgary, followed by a stakeholder engagement survey and possibly a few one on one consultations. Both MCA Alberta and the Alberta Trade Contractors Coalition will be attending the sessions in Calgary and Edmonton. Based on the Stakeholder information package received it would appear this government has a good handle on the issues and is serious about resolving construction industry payment issues.
We will keep you posted as things progress.

The following STANDATA were issued under the National Building Code–2019 Alberta edition.
STANDATA, which include province-wide variances and interpretations, are specific to the version of the Code that they were issued under. Once a new Code comes into effect, all existing STANDATA are deemed to be obsolete and cannot be used for new construction. They are, however, still valid for evaluating code compliance of existing structures by fire services, insurance companies and by building inspectors in consideration of renovations and retrofits.

News Release: Streamlined rules for workplace committees
New rules will reduce administrative burdens for job creators, uphold workers' rights to participate in workplace health and safety and support a consistent health and safety culture across organizations.
Rather than being required at each work site, committees and representatives will be required for each employer regardless of how many sites the employer operates. For example, a school division will require only one committee rather than having a committee at each school in the division.
'We have heard that the current rules around health and safety committees are not working. The new rules for health and safety committees will support healthy and safe workplaces while reducing administrative burdens. Employers are still responsible for ensuring healthy and safe work sites and the new rules provide the flexibility to meet the unique needs of each workplace.'
Jason Copping, Minister of Labour and Immigration
