and our associate, Pattie, are ready for this month's Kentucky Derby! Antique lovers tend to enjoy history and tradition and nothing is more traditional and historic than the Kentucky Derby!

The Kentucky Derby, also known as "America's Greatest Race", has been an American tradition every year since 1875. It is held in Louisville, KY the first Saturday in May at the historic Churchill Downs Race Track. Thoroughbred horses run the one and one quarter mile dirt track in hopes of wearing the wreath of roses at the finish!

The tradition of wearing glamorous hats came about early on when Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. modeled the derby after the European style races where morning dress was required.  The tradition of wearing morning dress with top hats and daytime formal wear to races is still done in England today.

Another delight for those attending the derby, or just attending a derby party, is the much loved mint julep!  A simple but refreshing drink of a simple sugar syrup, mint, and bourbon whisky over crushed ice in a silver cup is a real treat for this time of year.

Several of our member shops and shows are getting in the mood for the derby!  Serendipity and Flucy Lucy are ready for the big race with the lovely hats featured in this article.  Gigi's Antique Griffin in Griffin, GA will be celebrating with their annual Kentucky Derby Party on May 7th.  Wear your hats and enjoy the festivities!

A Fun note from Patti and a pleased member

Just spoke with Mr. Horton at Horton Antiques in Plainview, TX. He is very pleased with our website and brochure and says that it has brought him lots of business and he is encouraging other area stores to join. He gave me an example of a fellow who spoke no English but communicated with Mr Horton through his ipad or iphone and told him that he had seen his website with pictures of oriental items and made a special trip to Plainview to purchase. Mr. Thornton and the gentleman were very happy!
