Port Alberni community rises together to become official FHBC society
|
by Ali Baggott and FHBC Staff
For most when they talk about Vancouver Island hockey it’s often presumed to be about Victoria or Cowichan, but one hockey Family is changing that. Long-time field hockey community members Andi Shannon and Giles Wheatley have, together, created their own pocket of junior hockey in Port Alberni, a less than 3-hour drive up island from Victoria.
The hockey couple are no strangers to field hockey in BC having both coached and played at a high level both on the island and in Vancouver. They relocated to Port Alberni, Shannon’s hometown, where they are raising their four children and, like the hockey builders they have always been, started a hockey community. That community took a big step recently becoming an official Field Hockey BC recognized society.

In Memoriam: Ian Dowdswell
|
Former Canadian Men’s National Team member, Ian Dowdswell passed away on May 12th, at the age of 86. A member of the team that qualified Canada for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Ian also played at provincial and club levels in British Columbia for many years.
Originally from England, and having lived in Zanzibar, Singapore and New Zealand, Ian moved to Vancouver in 1956. He attended the University of British Columbia, graduating with BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering.
Dowdswell was thoroughly involved with field hockey in the 60’s, when he played for the Grasshoppers A team in the Vancouver League. The team was one of the prominent sides in the Division 1 at the time, and his performances earned him a spot on both the BC Team and the National Men’s team in 1963. He represented Canada in the 1963 Lyon Tourney in France, where Canada defeated the United States to earn a spot in the upcoming 1964 Olympics.

BC Provincial Team of 1963; Ian is the 4th from the right on the top row
Ian continued playing field hockey at the club level and joined the Vancouver Hawks in 1982, where he was an active player until 1994. After an injury, he stepped to the sidelines and became more of a supporter of his children’s involvement in field hockey and other sports. As stated in his obituary, “normally a soft-spoken gentleman, Ian’s voice could be heard booming support from the sidelines at soccer and field hockey games through all kinds of weather for many years.”
According to Ken Beckett, from the Hawks, “Ian was a very generous contributor to the Fund Raising effort to install a Synthetic Turf Field at UBC”. The Field, named after former Canadian FHA President, Harold Wright, is heavily used by the field hockey community in Vancouver.
Rest in peace, Ian.
The obituary can be accessed here.

FHBC thanks Ken Beckett and John McBryde for providing more information about Ian Dowdswell's relationship with field hockey, as well as the photographs for this In Memoriam.
