TALK OF THE MONTH: Fall and Winter are the best seasons to work on your outdoor space.
Can I plant shrubs and trees in the Fall?
Fall is a great time to address your landscaping needs. Roughly September through November ideally to allow the roots to become established before the ground freezes and winter sets in. Planting trees and shrubs in the Fall gives the plants a better chance for good root development before winter. Trees and shrubs planted in the Fall can establish their roots through the Fall, Winter, and Spring months so they are prepared to withstand our hot and humid Summers here in Georgia.
What is GA planting zone?
When buying plants, or searching for inspiration, it is always good to know what planting zone we are in. Most of Georgia falls into Zone 8, with only mountainous north Georgia remaining Zone 7.
We recommend plants labeled to grow in Zone 7 and warmer and I think most gardeners will have success with them.
Perfect time for Hardscaping projects and Drain Work:
There are many reasons why Fall and Winter are the best times of year to start hardscaping projects. The major reason is timing: build your hardscapes in Winter and you'll be able to enjoy them come Spring. Timing the design and constructions allows you to maximize your use of your hardscapes.
It is also perfect for drain work. Without proper drainage, you could easily find that water starts pooling up in different areas, often with the result of killing your lawn, trees, bushes or other plants. Worse still, poor drainage could also end up causing structural damage or cracks in the foundation should the water pool up next to the home.
