Fall Sports Wrap-Up

Varsity Football

This past weekend marked the conclusion of the fall sports season for many of our student athletes at the Section I Football Championship game against Valhalla. Our players put up a herculean effort, but Valhalla carried the day in a hard-fought victory. Despite the loss, our student athletes on the football team and across the board had impressive showings this season.

Varsity football concluded the season with a 6-4 record and made their way all the way up to the Section I Championships. Individual recognitions will come next week, just in time for celebrations throughout the holiday break.

"The team worked hard to continue to get better each week throughout the season," said Coach Joe Cox. "They showed a lot of fight right up until the very end."

Girls' Varsity Volleyball

The high school girls' varsity volleyball team showed a dominant performance this year, with a 16-4 overall record, including a 6-0 sweep of their league and a league championship. Unsatisfied with their regular season and league championship performance, the team is aiming even higher for next season, with nine returning players and sights set on a better Section 1 playoff performance.

"Our squad benefitted from great leadership and experience from our 3-year Varsity seniors, Abby Dann, Hope McCormack, and Naia Neuman," said coach Patty Duane. "Their skills and game knowledge were critical to our success this season. We were also fortunate to have experienced juniors and sophomores who brought their skills and high volleyball IQ."

Our varsity volleyball players cleaned house on awards:

All-League Honors: Seniors and Co-Captains Abigail Dann, Hope McCormack, and Naia Neuman. Sophomores Grace Demitrovic, Taylor Denike, and Natasha Mansfield

All-Section Honors: Taylor Denike

Girls' Varsity Soccer

This year's girls' varsity soccer team closed out the season with an 11-7 overall record and a 1-1 record in sectional play. Our student athletes made a statement in the opening game of sectionals, where they hosted against a strong Rye Neck lineup and came out on top in a 4-1 victory.

"This season was a prime example of what can be accomplished when players believe in the collective efforts of one another and of their team!" said coach Matthew Pringle. "I am proud of the passion that our student athletes approached every phase of the season with."

This year's girls' varsity soccer awards include:

All-Section Honorable Mention: Amra Klincevic

All-League Honorable Mention: Phoebe Walker and Samira Philips

Natalie Sparta provided a particularly stand-out performance this year, winning All-Section and All-League awards and being named Player of the Year Conference III League B, All-State Nominee, and an Elite 12 Nominee.

Community Spotlight: Tom Warren

A regular sight at Dobbs Ferry High School's sporting events, Tom Warren has been using the skills that he gained as a professional photographer to capture our student athletes in action for years. When Jerel Warren, Tom's son, took an interest in sports at DFHS, Tom began to document his son's athletic escapades. He soon discovered a passion for high school sports photography and for sharing his photos with the Dobbs Ferry community.

"I remember playing sports in high school, I would have liked some high quality photos from back then. Our student athletes play with so much heart, they care so much. Much more than college or professional," Warren said. "It's a privilege to photograph their games and it's a lot of fun!"

Even now that Jerel has graduated, Tom continues to photograph DFHS sports and share his photos with students and the community through digital photo albums and his Instagram page, @eaglesnaps22. It's community members like Tom Warren that help us create memories and experiences that our student athletes will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Thank you to Tom for your selfless service to our student athletes and for providing the action photos used above in our fall sports wrap up!

Winter Facilities Project

The work to improve and secure our school facilities never stops, and Director of Facilities Denis Brazil says that this winter season will be no exception.

The Facilities Department aims to improve our school security infrastructure and improve usability through an upgrade of the card swipe system used to control the entrances to our buildings across the district. Current systems, while functional and satisfactory in the past, have become outdated and are less than user-friendly.

This upgrade will also provide an opportunity to integrate our card swipe systems with existing security infrastructure which already operates off of upgraded software, enabling greater security capabilities in all of our buildings.

School Administrators Train with Local Police Department

Members of the Dobbs Ferry Police Department joined school administrators and Coordinator of Security Mike Nemeth at the Dobbs Ferry High School auditorium this week for a special training session.

Nemeth posed a series of hypothetical emergency situations and each group, comprised of administrators or law enforcement, was tasked with determining a response based on protocol, evolving circumstances, and communications from other teams. Teams worked together to identify priorities, communicate, and determine the methods by which they would keep students and staff members safe in the event of an emergency.

The day's training served to maintain the open dialogue between law enforcement and school administrators and served as a sobering reminder of our first and foremost responsibility at Dobbs Ferry School District, the safety of our students.

Performing Arts at Dobbs Ferry School District

Another year means that another suite of performances from our young cast and crew members across the district has begun! Last weekend, Dobbs Ferry Middle School put on a performance of Aladdin Jr. thanks to the hard work and dedication of our cast and crew members. And of course, a Dobbs Ferry Schools production wouldn't be possible without the critical contributions of the Rat Pack.

Congratulations to everyone involved on a lively and fun performance, and thank you to the always supportive Dobbs Ferry community for your support of the performing arts at all of our schools.

Dobbs Ferry High School will put on a performance of Alice by Heart in April. Our district's youngest actors at Springhurst Elementary will showcase their skills this March in a performance of Seussical Jr..
