October Zone 10 Update
With cooler weather upon us and the last championships of the year on the horizon, we are excited to see the continued successes of our Zone 10 members in the ring.

Congratulations to Skylar Wireman of Bonsall, California, who rode to fourth place at the prestigious Dover Saddlery/USEF Hunter Seat Medal Final at Pennsylvania National Horse Show. Two beautiful rounds and a sophisticated work-off brought Skylar and her mount Eretto to top honors among the country’s best junior equitation riders.

Zone 10 members rode beautifully in the USHJA Medal Finals - West at Blenheim Equisports. Maggie Dunraf and Covergirl took home the blue in the USHJA 3’3” Hunter Seat Medal Final - West, while Elizabeth Gray and Quentino claimed The EMO Agency, Inc./USHJA 3'3" Jumping Seat Medal Final - West.

Bravo to the competitors in the 2021 Sallie B. Wheeler/USEF/USHJA Hunter Breeding National Championships - West. Only The Best, a 2019 KWPN colt bred and owned by Tish Quirk and handled by Doug Snell, was named as Best Young Horse - West Coast.

We’d also like to congratulate our members who were selected to participate in the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge Nationals and Adult HQC Nationals: Taya Wykert, Cynthia Flavin, Kris Huber, Peggy Kline, Lynn Tetenbaum, Katie Van Horne, Lyssette Williams, and Sharon Zimmerman.

The 2021 Marshall & Sterling Insurance/USHJA National Championships are just one month away. Qualifying lists for Championships, taking place Nov. 15-21 in Las Vegas, are now available online, and acceptance letters will be mailed out beginning October 10. We can’t wait to see you there.

Zone 10 Horse of the Year Championships are right around the corner, with Hunters (North) at Paso Park Oak Tree Classic (Nov. 10-14), and all Horse of the Year divisions (South) at Camelot Autumn Classic (Nov. 10-14).

As part of our ongoing series on members who are giving back to our community, this month we’ll introduce you to Katie Taylor, the new Co-Chair of the Zone 10 Committee.

Zone 10 Members Giving Back to the Community: Katie Taylor
Newly appointed Zone 10 Committee Co-Chair Katie Taylor took her first lesson at age six at Far West Farms in Calabasas, California, and never looked back. She rode throughout her junior career with the Karazissis family, and after a few years working as a school teacher and riding as an amateur, decided to turn professional.

Taylor currently works with Sean Leckie at Blue Ridge Farms in San Juan Capistrano, focusing primarily on the hunters and equitation, and stays busy with private clients of her own, catch-riding at shows, and lending a hand to other trainers. Her favorite thing about Zone 10 is the strength of the community: “We’re very close-knit. When we go East or do things as a zone, whether we’re on the same team or competing against each other, we’re always rooting for one another.”

Active in Zone 10 committees since she first went professional nearly a decade ago, Taylor is looking forward to bringing her experience in and out of the equestrian industry to the Co-Chair position. “I was a teacher, so I enjoy organization and being in charge of things,” Taylor says. “I’m excited to work with different people and see what ideas people have. I’m looking forward to hearing everyone’s ideas and seeing what we can do to make Zone 10 even better.”
