We are thrilled to see our riders representing Zone 10 throughout the United States! Congratulations to all who competed in the Platinum Performance/USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park.

We would also like to congratulate the Zone 10A Team on earning the team gold medal at the USEF Pony Jumper Team National Championship for the fourth consecutive time. Way to go, pony jumper riders!

It was fantastic to see Zone 10 riders on the podium at the 2021 FEI North American Youth Championships at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival in Traverse City, Mich. The Zone 8, 9, and 10 Children’s Team on took the gold medal and the Zone 10 Pre-Children’s (1.30m) Team clinched the bronze medal.

Remember that the 2021 USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge and the USHJA Adult Horsemanship Quiz Challenge are underway! Best of luck to all our members putting their horsemanship knowledge to the test. Meanwhile, the 2021 USHJA Stable Challenge has wrapped up. We want to give a shoutout to our Zone 10 winner: Julie Conner-Daniels and Eclipse Farms.

The USHJA National Championships at The Las Vegas National (Nov. 15-21) at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center are just around the corner. Did you know that the USHJA Affiliate Championships have expanded offerings for Juniors and Amateurs in 2' and 2'6" Hunters and Equitation and Jumpers from .70m to .90m? We can’t wait to see you in Las Vegas.

Throughout the rest of the year, we will be introducing you to members who are giving back to the community and this month we are featuring Mandy Porter.

See you in the show ring!

Changes to Zone Specifications for Low Children’s, Low Adult Amateur and Low Pony Hunter Sections Beginning Sept. 1
The following changes address combining language for Low Hunter sections effective September 1, 2021, for the remainder of the 2021 competition year. These changes will be incorporated into 2022 Zone Specifications for the 2022 competition year beginning December 1, 2021.

Zone 10

Low Adults: Combining/Dividing Sections: If there are fewer than three (3) entries in the Low Adult Amateur Hunter section, it may be combined with the Low Children’s Hunter Horse section. The Low Adult Amateur Hunter Horse section may only be combined with the Children's Hunter Pony and Low Children's Hunter Horse sections after those sections have been combined and still do not meet the three (3) entry minimum.

Low Children’s: Combining/Dividing Sections: If there are fewer than three (3) horses entered in the Low Children's Hunter Horse section, then they may be combined and judged with the Children's Hunter Ponies or the Low Adult Amateur Hunter section. If there are still fewer than three (3) entries after the Children's Hunter Pony section has been combined with the Low Children's Hunter Horse section, these sections may only then combine with the Low Adult Amateur Hunter Horse section.

Zone 10 Members Giving Back to the Community: Mandy Porter
Grand prix show jumping rider Mandy Porter is passionate about helping to develop the next generation of young professionals on the West Coast. Recently, she welcomed the 2021 West Palms Michael Nyuis Scholarship Recipients to a horsemanship workshop at her farm in Encinitas, Calif. Mandy is also one of the founders of the Carol Dean Porter Foundation.

“Carol Dean Porter was my first trainer and she basically taught me all about horsemanship,” Mandy said. “When Carol passed away, I wanted to do something special in her honor. My friend Denise Finch and I came up with an idea of a grant for riders that don’t have the financial means to compete. We are still in the process of finalizing the details.”

Mandy looks forward to carrying on Carol’s tradition of giving back to the community. “Carol was all about helping people and she always wanted to share her knowledge,” she said. “As a junior, my family wasn’t incredibly wealthy. If I were growing up today, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”

The West Palms Events Michael Nyuis Scholarship Program offers support for young riders who have the passion and drive to compete but lack the financial resources to do so consistently throughout the year. The program is named in honor of West Palms CEO Dale Harvey’s nephew, Michael Nyuis, who was always happy to help and support others whenever he could. In addition to show credit, West Palms also connects the scholarship recipients with top riders, including Mandy, Ashlee Bond and Laura Kraut, for educational workshops.

Mandy partnered with the West Palms Events Team to bring the 2021 Michael Nyuis Scholarship Recipients to her farm for a horsemanship-focused workshop. “If someone wants to learn, I want to help them,” Mandy said. “Dale reached out to me about the workshop, and my first reaction was ‘yes.’ These workshops are a great way to further knowledge and help develop these future professionals. I believe you should always strive to keep learning.”
