November Zone 10 Update
While the past month has been filled with exciting year-end competitions and championships, it has unfortunately also been a time of stress and uncertainty for our members in both Northern and Southern California as they faced devastating wildfires again this year. As always, the equestrian community proved its unity and strength by coming together to help evacuate and rescue as many horses as possible. Amazing volunteers throughout the state, including haulers, trainers, owners, riders, and more, have helped with evacuations, donated money and supplies, offered temporary stabling, and taken care of horses that weren’t their own. We are extremely grateful for everyone who helped transport and shelter horses, who donated food, water, and supplies, and who risked their own safety to help rescue horses in need. We know several barns were affected by these fires, and we hope our members will take advantage of the USHJA Foundation’s Horseman’s Assistance Fund, which was created specifically for times like this. If you need assistance, please consider applying, or if you know someone in need, please spread the word. We are lucky to be a part of such a great community in Zone 10, and we hope everyone’s barn life can return to normal soon!

Zone 10 Member Highlight: Avery Glynn

Avery has been on a roll this fall, winning the PCHA Horsemanship Finals and the 3’3” and Overall Champion in the Les Talents Hermès and capping it off with a thrilling victory in the Taylor Harris Insurance Services (THIS) National Children’s Medal Finals. After two rounds, Avery and fellow Californian Amber Ayyad were separated by a razor thin margin of just 0.89 points. The judges called for a head to head work off between the two.

“Usually in a work off I like to watch other people to know my track,” Avery shared. “But this time I focused on my plan for the work off, and I didn’t focus on what her scores were. That helped me from becoming too nervous.” Avery kept calm and proved her consistency in the work off to earn the championship.

“Winning the THIS Medal Finals was an amazing experience! I know I would never have been able to do it without my horse Calle,” Avery commented. “She is the sweetest, cuddliest horse I have ever met. I started riding her about two years ago and she has been fantastic for me.”

Calle’s trip to the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Maryland was made possible with the help of the Shelby Drazan Memorial Award. This special award recognizes a junior equitation rider that displays sportsmanship, integrity, and passion in the show jumping arena and the community. As the recipient, Avery was awarded roundtrip air and ground transportation for one horse and equipment to the Indoor Horse Show Circuit.

“Winning the Shelby Drazan Memorial Award meant so much to me because it provided me the opportunity to bring my own horse back east,” Avery explained. “This award helped me so much and I’m so thankful.”

With 2019 on the horizon, Avery is excited for another show season.

“I just finished the 2018 show year and next year I am looking forward to another great year with Calle, my hunter King, and hopefully many other horses!”
