Weaverville Community Center at Dottie Sherrill Knoll Grand Opening
Mark your calendars - the new Weaverville Community Center at Dottie Sherrill Knoll is opening soon! The Town has scheduled a grand opening program for Labor Day, Monday, September 6, 2021 at 11:00am. We will be sending out a special edition of the e-Focus newsletter later this month with an emphasis on the new Community Center, fundraising efforts, and grand opening.
Welcome Officer Borchardt!
The Weaverville Police Department welcomes its newest officer, Melissa Borchardt. Officer Borchardt is a reserve officer for the department and works full-time as a police officer, EMT, and aircraft rescue firefighter for the Asheville Regional Airport. She began her dedication to the Weaverville Police Department during Basic Law Enforcement Training. She has volunteered countless hours in Weaverville and recently worked with the town during the July 4th celebration.

When she's not busy with two jobs, Officer Borchardt enjoys riding her Harley Davidson. In fact, it was during an annual Cops For Kids motorcycle ride that she was introduced to our police department and took interest in the community involvement. She is married and has a family of fur babies too! Her work ethic, dedication, love for learning, and can-do attitude are just a few reasons we are thrilled to have her join our team.

Planning Department News
Town Council is slated to consider an annual update of the priorities of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) in August. An important aspect of the updating the CLUP is having accurate studies which reflect conditions present as close to real time as possible with the current version of the CLUP having been adopted in August of 2019. The following is information gathered during the CLUP adoption process related to governmental infrastructure and basic information on land which may be of interest to those in the community.
Important Message from Public Works
The Public Works Department wants to provide a reminder for our residents about several garbage & recycling issues that have arisen in recent weeks.

The first reminder is to NOT put any liquids into the garbage. A recent spill occurred in the downtown area when someone put a container of liquid with a clay material mixed within into their garbage. When it was compacted in the garbage truck, a spill was the result, as shown in the attached picture. Public Works crews then returned to the area and used our street-washing tanker truck to wash the material off the street. Luckily, the clay material was water-soluble and was easily removed from the pavement. However, some folks also do this with paint, and when spilled is almost impossible to remove. The simplest way to deal with any liquid is to flush it into the sewer if it is a food-related product, such as spoiled milk or similar item. Anything that is non-soluble, such as paint, should be mixed with cat litter and allowed to dry completely. Empty the dried material into a garbage bag with your other trash, and place the empty dry can at the street so our garbage crew can verify that the can is empty.

Second, the blue recycling carts are for recycling items only that are to be placed within the cart individually and loose. Decals on the top of the cart lids give a list of YES items that can be recycled and NO items that should be placed in the garbage. No blue recycling bags are allowed
in the recycling carts, and the Curbie crew that picks up the recycling will soon stop picking up any blue bags. Also, no bagged garbage (regardless of bag color) should be placed in the blue cart. Anything that is not loose YES recyclable items in the blue cart may be left behind for you to store until the next garbage day.

Finally, if you are in doubt about garbage collection on a holiday that falls within the week, the “quick links” tab at the top of the town’s website home page (www.weavervillenc.org) gives the garbage collection schedule for holidays. Any questions about these tips or holiday collections can be referred to the Public Works Department at 828-645-0606 or emailed to the Superintendent of the Sanitation Division at ecutshall@weavervillepublicworks.org .
This Month's Message from the
Weaverville Center for Creative & Healthy Living
We are working with Town staff to set up four “Community Center Activity Recommendations” meetings. We need your attendance at these meetings to have your voices heard to better understand what your interests and concerns might be. We also need you to spread the word to your family, friends, and neighbors. Here are the dates and times for the meetings to be held in the Community Room at the Town Hall, on Main Street.

  • Tuesday, August 17, Noon
  • Thursday, August 19, 6:30 PM
  • Tuesday, August 24, 3:00 PM
  • Thursday, August 26, at 6:30 PM (This mtg will be on Zoom/Mtg details to be posted on Town Newsletter)

Our Board has been working diligently to engage Weaverville townsfolk to volunteer to lead a diverse set of activities for the first three months of programming. The responses we have received from our fellow townsfolk who are reaching out to lend us a hand as an instructor, coach, musician, storyteller, and more has been incredible. It is humbling to have so many people reach out to get involved with our project – with no pay nor promise of future remuneration. We have 80% of the instructors/coaches/leaders that we need to fill the programming slots which will begin on Monday, September 13th and run through the end of 2021. We hope to have all slots filled by the end of August. Based on the information gathered from the “Community Center Activity Recommendations” meetings to be held in late-August, the Board will evaluate how to improve the schedule for First Quarter, 2022. The evaluation of the schedule for next quarter will also involve working with the Town’s new Recreation Manager who should be named soon and in place sometime in August. We look forward to collaborating with this new Town employee in making the Community Center a source of civic pride.

Keep Labor Day weekend open, if possible, (September 4, 5, & 6) as the Town is planning on officially opening the new Community Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house. Our Board members look forward to meeting our fellow townsfolk as we will have a table set up to get you signed up for activities and provide information about how you can get involved as an instructor/coach/musician/storyteller and more. We look forward to explaining what our mission is – and why that should matter to every Weaverville resident.

In closing, we invite you to visit our new Facebook Page. If you have not done so as yet, you can find us using your browser by entering “Facebook Weaverville Center for Creative & Healthy Living” or follow the link: https://www.facebook.com/WCCHL/posts/103265548678463 . Please join us by “Liking” us on our Facebook Page so that you can follow our progresss, track upcoming events, and share our progress with your family and friends.
