Scheduled Water Outage on June 4 - 5, 2022

The Town of Weaverville has scheduled a water outage on June 4-5, 2022 for the area along Merrimon Avenue between Lake Louise and Reems Creek Road. This outage is planned for town crews to install a new main-line water valve at the intersection of Merrimon Avenue and Aiken Road and to allow the construction of a new water tap by a contractor. The outage is scheduled to begin at 6 pm on Saturday June 4, with the water scheduled to be back on by 6:00am on Sunday, June 5, 2022. The general area to be affected includes:

  • Creekside Village
  • Homes and Apartments along Aiken Road from Merrimon Avenue to I-26 bridge
  • Hickory Lane
  • Sample Group Inc.
  • OTS
  • Thermo-Fisher Scientific
  • A-B Emblem
  • General Equipment
  • Bochiro Health & Wellness
  • Dodge on Chlopek Way

Residents in the affected area may experience low or no water pressure during this outage. When the work is completed, customers may experience discolored water or air in the lines and are advised to wait until the water is clear before using it. For more information, please contact the Town of Weaverville Public Works Department, Water Maintenance Division, at 828-645-0606 Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

The Future of Weaverville's Water Supply

You may know that Weaverville Town Council has been debating what the best course of action is to guarantee adequate water capacity for Weaverville’s future for some time. We are currently using about 60% of the amount of water we can produce each day at our Water Treatment Plant. We continue to increase this as more people and water users move to our area. Providing water is essential for our town citizens and also allows us to influence and manage what types of growth and development happen around the town. Construction of a water plant expansion takes considerable time and money and thus we need to make decisions regarding water not for today but for five years from now.

Three months ago Council directed me and the Town Manager to meet with several regional stakeholders and other governments to discover what collaborative opportunities may exist and what our various options are.

We have met with all of those entities and as a result have good understanding of what the various water systems are in our region and what actions we can take to solve our water issues.

I developed a set of recommendations and presented them to the Town Council at their May 23 meeting. I have incorporated conservation, diversification and expansion ideas in these. You can view these recommendations at: https://weavervillenc.org/mayors-recommendations-on-water-capacity-issues-to-town-council/

This is a complicated issue and we have set a public information and input session to discuss them with you for Monday, June 20, 7pm at Town Hall.

I and Council members welcome the chance to talk with you about these in the coming weeks as we chart our water future. You can contact any of us with your ideas at: https://weavervillenc.org/governing/mayor-town-council/

Town Accepting 2022 Citizens Academy Applications

The Town of Weaverville hosts an annual Citizens’ Academy to promote open dialogue and provide the community with education about the workings of town government. Any resident is welcome to participate. The curriculum covers current town programs, services, policies, procedures, plus a “behind the scenes” look at how Weaverville’s government operates.

The Weaverville Citizens’ Academy offers citizens insight into how the town functions with workshop sessions led by town department heads, town staff, and elected officials. Most sessions are held at the given department, which allows department staff to provide a tour. An overview of the department functions, along with a question-and-answer session at the end of each program are also part of each session.

Participants of the Weaverville Citizens’ Academy are given a foundation of knowledge regarding town government and services. This foundation and interaction with the town’s key department staff creates a stronger, informed

community, which makes it easier for the town government to function smoothly. Sessions are held once per month on Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.

In order to graduate, participants are expected to attend at least five of the seven sessions and attend one Weaverville Town Council meeting. Application to the program is required. Applications may be sent to Weaverville Town Manager Selena Coffey via mail at P.O. Box 338, Weaverville, NC 28787, or via email at scoffey@weavervillenc.org. Applications may also be hand-delivered to the Weaverville Town Hall, 30 South Main Street.

Interested parties should apply by completing the following application located at https://weavervillenc.org/town-accepting-applications-for-the-2022-citizens-academy/

Thank you from Public Works

The Town of Weaverville maintains the Main Street Nature Park, located behind Town Hall, below the downtown clock parking lot, and off of Pine Street. With walking trails, benches, picnic tables, and a stage, it is a quiet and peaceful setting just one block east of North Main Street. It is a refuge for wildlife, especially for a wide variety of bird life, with at least 25 different species having been observed. It is a favorite destination for our local schools to conduct nature activities and short walks. In addition, two stormwater management ponds and a vegetative buffer provide habitat, nesting opportunities, water, and feeding areas for the birds and other wildlife.

Like any park, the Nature Park requires maintenance by the Public Works Department by our Grounds Maintenance staff in the Public Works Department for mowing, weed trimming, path mulching, and other needs. In addition, it needs periodic trash pickup to maintain its appeal. The Town has created an “Adopt a Park Program” for those organizations that offer to help in our parks with maintenance efforts, such as trash pickup, kiosk and sign cleaning, invasive vegetation removal, and other helpful tasks. Our first organization to ask to adopt a park is a small woman-owned business located in Weaverville called “Shecology”. Mari Fox, owner, is a town resident and is a daily walker with her dog Daisy around Lake Louise and in the Main Street Nature Park. She has adopted the Nature Park and the town has placed signs at two of the park entrances to acknowledge her contribution to the cleanliness of the Park’s trails and grounds. Mari and her employee Grace Anderson conducted a trash pickup in April near the town hall park entrance, collecting a full bag of trash along with loose cardboard.

The town appreciates Shecology and their interest in helping to maintain our beautiful parks. The town invites other interested parties to contact the Public Works Department at 828-645-0606 if you would like more information on our “Adopt a Park” program.

From Weaverville to Ukraine

On Friday evening, May 27, an extremely generous standing-room-only crowd of Weavervillians and other friends came out to our new Community Center to show their support for Ukraine. The event, which featured a silent auction and live music, netted more than nine thousand dollars in donations for the United National Women’s League of America, which is providing medical supplies, food, water, hygiene kits, and generators to Ukrainian villages that have been shelled. The Town of Weaverville and the event’s organizers are deeply grateful to the artisans and businesses that donated goods and services, the local eateries that donated refreshments, the musicians who donated their talent, and the hard-working volunteers that made it a successful evening — Shirley Parkin, Miryam Rojas, Betty Friedrickson, Breah Parker, Tracy Munn, Carla Reif, Celia Naranjo, Chad Hajek, Carla Orellana, and Carlos Miranda. If you were unable to attend and would still like to donate, please visit www.UNWLA.org.
