TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS - CROSS-TRAINING FOR ENDURO RIDING

By Stephanie Yankovich

For those who know me and have been witness to my off-road adventures over the last few years, you’ve probably seen me take on endurance challenges like the Rally Connex Dacre, race The Corduroy Enduro (4 times and counting), and watched me get my butt kicked at the Gnarden Extreme Enduro, twice! My enthusiasm and passion for the ‘gnar’ far outweighs my ability to ride it, but for some reason, riding the rough stuff speaks to my soul and motivates me to push harder, reach further, and aim higher with every passing season. My first attempt at Gnarden in 2021 (and the beating I endured there) was a humbling experience that made me acutely aware of my inadequate technical skills, many bad habits, and the myriad of techniques that I needed to improve upon, if I dreamed of hitting larger and harder obstacles and graduating to more technical terrain. I realized I needed to go back to the basics, refocus my efforts, and devise a cunning plan to improve my skills.

The off-season is a great time to identify your goals for the following season, and last winter I had lots of time to daydream and ponder all things Moto. Watching videos of Erzbergrodeo and Red Bull Romaniacs got me thinking about the Pros and what it is that all the Extreme Enduro legends have that distinguishes them from us mere mortals? What do riders like Graham Jarvis, David Knight, Laia Sanz. Billy Bolt, Louise Forsley and our Canadian sweetheart, Trystan Hart all have in common? In addition to the obvious things (years of training and thousands of hours of hard work that have contributed to their mastery of the sport), there’s one prevailing factor that can’t be overlooked. They are all trials riders. If you want to dominate the podium in Hard Enduro these days, it seems you need to have put in the time and honed your skills on a trials bike.
