Women Playing Squash is on the Increase in British Columbia

Women's Week (September 23 - October 1) was a tremendous success in British Columbia.

Women's Week Committee Chair Donalda Meyers was thrilled with the turn-out of women new to the game across the province. She mentioned that some clubs like Bentall in Vancouver and University of Victoria had over 20 participants. Vancouver Racquet Club has been hosting a similar event for women for many years and organizer Bev Lawton was impressed again this year with the turn-out.
The impetus for Women's Week was the Squash BC Board of Directors recognizing that there has been a decline in women playing squash in the province. Robert Pacey of Squash Republic brought Women's Week to BC  a few years ago and Squash BC was able to build on his program. Hosting Women's Week on an annual basis should ensure the growth of the game for many years to come.
Special thanks to our many sponsors who provided racquets and other product for giveaway during the week. Our sponsors included:  Technifibre, Karakal Manta, Black Knight, Apollo and Squash Republic.

BC Open is a Sell-Out

Ben Uliana, the Head Squash Pro at Cedar Hills Squash Club in Victoria, is thrilled with the turn-out this year for the BC Open Championships. The tournament sold-out two weeks in advance of the first day of the tournament which is October 12. This is a very good indication that squash players throughout the province are looking forward to a very competitive season. There is a waiting list in case someone does withdraw prior to the tournament. The caliber of this tournament is exceptional with current World #15, Victoria's Vicky Lust seeded one on the women's side and fellow Englishman, Andrew Birk seeded one on the men's side. Please join us at Cedar Hills the weekend of October 12-15 for a wonderful weekend of squash.

Perseverance Pays Dividends for Nathan Ozog

Anyone who plays squash competitively knows it is one of the most demanding sports to play...fitness, speed, strength and a strong mental attitude all help. When injury happens, most players take a break from the game but not Nathan Ozog.

Nathan plays the number one position on a level two team from the Bentall Club in the Vancouver Squash League. His team made it all the way to the final this past spring despite having their number one player suffer from a serious shoulder injury for the last two months of the season. Nathan continued to play despite being in a lot of pain and led his team to victory in the playoffs. It was his last match being a right-hander. After winning the playoffs, he knew he couldn't continue to play with his right shoulder so he switched to play with his left hand. For anyone who has ever tried to switch hands, you know how frustrating that can be. However, Nathan continued to persevere to the extent that he was able to win his first tournament as a left-hander.

Congrats Nathan. You're an inspiration to all squash players.
