This summer at the YW has been filled with new things...In Case You Missed It--Check us Out!

ACKNOWLEDGING THE PAST, WELCOMING THE FUTURE

The YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade Board of Directors is pleased to announce a change in executive leadership. Leonor Romero has been appointed Interim CEO after the departure of Eileen Maloney-Simon. Leonor joined the YWCA in 1997, and currently serves the agency in an executive leadership role as CFO/COO. She has extensive experience in the financial and administrative operations of the YWCA, and will oversee the continued delivery of premier programs to the women, children, and families we serve.  The YWCA has been fortunate to have had Eileen's leadership during her distinguished 21-year tenure
shaping the organization through programmatic growth, strategic positioning within the community, and empowering those that the YWCA served. The Board of Directors extends gratitude and thanks to Eileen for her unwavering commitment and service to the mission of the YWCA.

The Board of Directors is committed to a comprehensive executive search to select a new CEO who will continue to fulfill the YWCA mission, vision and strategic plan of the YWCA as we approach our centennial anniversary in 2019.

NEW BOARD CHAIR: WELCOME ANA CORRALES

Miami Dade College Professor, Ana Corrales, has been appointed the new Board President.  Ana has a longstanding history as an advocate of women's causes, she has served on the YWCA Board for three years and is a founding member of the international women's networking organization Femfessionals.
Corrales is a Senior Associate Professor of Economics at Miami Dade College, where she has been teaching since 2005. She is a 2013 graduate of  Leadership MiamiĀ®, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce's leadership development program for young professionals. In 2014, Professor Corrales was honored with the School of Business Endowed Teaching Chair, the most prestigious distinction for faculty at MDC. Most recently, she was selected as a 2015 Fellow in New Leaders Council Miami. She is thrilled to lead the YWCA of Greater Miami into the next phase of the organization's dedication to social justice, as they continue to improve the lives of those negatively affected by racial and gender inequities.

In addition to Corrales's appointment as Board President, the YW has chosen new Executive Board Members Carmelita Concepcion (Sales Executive, MDW Insurance Group), as Vice President, Christina Martinho (Brand Strategist, HAIRUWEAR) as Secretary, and Melissa  Fleitas (CPA, Berkowitz Pollack Brant)  as Treasurer.    Past Board President Lisa McGill, has tirelessly lead the organization through internal restructuring over the past five years, and is looking forward to the leadership of Corrales.
YWCA's Little Women:
 "Amaia Smiles"

In June, Amaia Llaurado began attending school for her first time ever at Gerry Sweet Head Start Early Head Start Center. She was not accustomed to being away from her grandparents who, for the first 2 years of her life, were the ones caring for her at home. She had to adapt to a new environment, new people, new routines.

For the first week Amaia did not eat anything, she would not sleep. Her second week in school came and still... no sleeping and nap time did not exist for her. However, the third week into school, on July 14, 2016... Amaia ate for her first time ever at Gerry Sweet! She enjoyed a few bites of lentil soup, yellow rice and mojo chicken. Following that amazing accomplishment... she felt comfortable enough to close her eyes and enter a peaceful slumber along with the rest of her classmates.

A child's development is a beautiful process, seeing how the love she received in the classroom made her comfortable enough to begin trusting those around her to the point that she trusted the food and trusted the environment enough so that she could sleep

Empowerment Knows No Gender:
Congratulations on Your Certifications Erick Luncey!

This Summer, the YW's very own Erick Luncey received Certification from Miami-Dade College School of Education, for Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC), and  Florida Child Care & Education Program Director Credential

Erick has worked tirelessly to receive these credentials to support his years of experience.
No matter what life has thrown at him, he perseveres, and was steadfast about his studies.  We know that, empowerment is not just for women it's for men too !
All accomplishments in life & education should be celebrated and we're so proud of him.   He hopes to advance in his position in Early Childhood Education and maybe one day be a director of a childcare facility. Erick's desire is to serve the children of the YWCA in the best possible way,

"I'm the kind of person that likes to have short goals and at this particular time in my life, I wanted to improve my knowledge in the field of early childhood even more. This pushed me to get my CDA and Director's Credentials because all of these classes provided more knowledge about working with children."
VOLUNTEER WITH THE YW

Suffolk Construction, one of the largest building contractors in Florida, teamed up with Brightline, the express intercity train arriving in 2017, and the United Way to rejuvenate one of the city's most important community centers, the YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade, 351 NW Fifth St.

More than 40 volunteers from the three organizations completed a half-day renovation project on Friday, June 3, that transformed the YWCA's after school room, teen center and computer clubhouse, which will benefit approximately 125 Miami-Dade children and teens who visit the center each year.
