October 2026 Edition

As we remember Mary during the month of October, we would like to introduce you to this image of Mary, Our Lady of Basila, before which Pope Leo prayed during his visit to Equatorial Guinea. As is the custom of that locale, the baby is carried on the back of the mother where Jesus seems very comfortable. So much tenderness is shown through this image! The title, Our Lady of Basila, translates to Our Lady of Compassion. May the compassion of Mary and her Son, Jesus, give you the experience of their tender love for you. May you grow ever closer to each of them. To learn more about this image, this article may be helpful.

Our Lady of Basila, pray for us!

Foundation Day of the

Sisters of Notre Dame

On October 1, we celebrate the founding of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Coesfeld, Germany. In 1850, two young women made their commitment to follow Jesus' call to serve the orphaned children of the Coesfeld area by providing them with a loving home and a good education. One hundred seventy-six years later the Sisters of Notre Dame continue to meet the needs of the times and areas in which they reside. We are blessed to stand on the shoulders of amazingly generous and faith-filled women. Please join us in prayers of gratitude for being able to share God's goodness with so many people around the world!

St. Francis of Assisi

In celebration of the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4, let us pray his beloved prayer ~

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,

Grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled, as to console;

To be understood, as to understand;

To be loved, as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive,

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.

St. Francis had a close connection with nature. As we celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, let us review or see for the first time some important ideas from Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si, which addresses our care for the environment. Here is a short video with some key ideas for us to ponder.

Mental Health Month

October is Mental Health Month with Mental Health Day being celebrated on October 10. It reminds us why good mental health is so important, and how we can prioritize it in our lives and communities. It is also a moment to talk openly and listen to what others are experiencing. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has a Mental Health Campaign "Healing and Hope," which goes on all year. During October, prayer resources are available. Check out the website for more information and resources.

Voting

As United States citizens, we each of the privilege and the responsibility to vote. Please make sure you are registered for next month's elections.
