Newsletter #70

May, 2019

 Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am taking this opportunity to alert you, again, to the many important meetings and activities that are taking place in May. It is a very busy time for me as we deal with the UC's Goldman School's Upper Hearst Project at Hearst and LaLoma;  the North Berkeley BART proposal;  a future ferry in Berkeley; our very important Fire Safety Town Hall; and the budget.

I am committed to representing your interests on these matters. Please write to me or call my office with your ideas and opinions. If I don't hear from you, I can only make assumptions about your concerns. For example, given our location and lack of reliable public transit, I am assuming that my constituents would like to see as much parking as possible preserved on the North Berkeley BART site. Is that correct?

The Fire Safety Town Hall will be a forum for time critical information on steps that the City, East Bay Regional Parks, and citizen groups are taking to anticipate the serious threat of wildfire in our area. Please try to attend.

Regards,

Susan Wengraf

bartNorth Berkeley BART
N. Berkeley BART
In 2018, the California Legislature passed AB 2923, allowing BART to bypass local zoning and build housing on their station sites. BART has asked Berkeley what they would like to see on their North Berkeley property.

The City Council will hold a special meeting to hear your thoughts.

When:    May 9th at 6 pm
Where:   Longfellow Middle School, 1500 Derby St.

Parking is a big issue, so if you currently drive to the North Berkeley station and park in order to access BART, and you want to see parking preserved, it is very important that the City Council hear from you. Some people are advocating for the removal of all parking spaces in order to accommodate more housing. Others are advocating for some parking. What do you think?

If you cannot attend the meeting in person, please email your thoughts to:

sirenEmergency Warning Sirens
Warning siren      Do you think Berkeley should have an emergency outdoor siren warning system?

On May 14th, the City Council will consider a proposal from the Disaster, Fire and Safety Commission recommending that the City invest in an emergency warning siren system as a supplement to other alert and warning technologies in Berkeley.

This recommendation from the Commission does not specify a specific siren brand or system. It recommends the most cost-effective solution that would reliably cover the maximum number of Berkeley households possible.

Given the high cost to purchase, maintain and replace such a system, the Fire Department is researching additional options and alternatives.

If approved, costs would still have to be determined and the City Manager would refer this to the budget process for consideration of funding sources and prioritization with the overall needs of the city.

You can learn more and give feedback through Berkeley Considers, an online forum. The City established this forum so that residents can participate in civic discourse when unable to attend meetings in person.  Please submit your comments by May 13th.

Of course, you can email me directly at [email protected], if you prefer.

View and give input using Berkeley Considers here. For more information read Item 27 on the May 14, 2019 City Council Agenda.
