Volunteer Highlight
Meet Saloni Mandaiker, a Grandreader volunteer at Greencastle Elementary School. The Grandreaders Program is one-on-one in-person reading with 2nd and 3rd grade students. Saloni came on to volunteer with JCA/Heyman Interages in October 2024. In her quest to improve her student’s ability to read more fluently, Saloni realized that her student has English as a second language. With Saloni’s experience working with ESOL students, she knew exactly what this child needed. Saloni advocated for her student to get books that have repetition in them. Books with repetition help students who don’t have English as a primary language by aiding in vocabulary development, building fluency, enhancing comprehension, and fostering confidence through the familiarity of repeated words and phrases. Thank you, Saloni Mandaiker!

SHARE Program Success with Sunrise Senior Living and St. Mary’s Catholic School
The Students Help and Reach Elders (SHARE) program successfully brought together residents of Sunrise Senior Living and kindergarteners from St. Mary’s Catholic School for meaningful intergenerational activities. This initiative fosters connections between older adults and youth through conversations, arts and crafts, STEM activities, music, and interactive games. Participants enjoyed building relationships, learning from one another, and sharing joy in a fun and engaging environment.
