DEVELOPMENTS THAT MATTER
Small Businesses Could Breathe Easier with Permanent Tax Changes
Small business owners are feeling increasing economic pressures and uncertainty, Tom Sullivan, U.S. Chamber Vice President of Small Business Policy, told America’s Small Business Network (ASBN) on Monday. Pro-growth tax policy can offer relief.
Why it matters: Provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) are set to expire at the end of the year. Congress must act to avoid the largest tax increase in U.S. history.
What he said: “Confidence and optimism on Main Streets all over the country is still above where it was in October,” Sullivan said.
-
But: Higher costs and inflation expectations make small businesses uneasy. “The cost of keeping and hiring good employees is going up,” Sullivan said. “So when something like tariffs comes into the picture… that feeds into that uncertainty we’re seeing.”
Making the TCJA reforms permanent would give small businesses more confidence, Sullivan said: “When small business owners know what they have to pay in taxes and what they can reinvest, that provides the certainty they’re looking for.”
Be smart: Sullivan shared with ASBN how the 2017 law helped small business owners use tax savings to benefit their businesses and employees. A Maryland IT company owner managed to move an employee from part-time to full-time, which not only improved the company's staffing but also helped the worker and her family purchase a home.
