Tips for Care Partners: Tune into Mindfulness

These unprecedented times can be very trying. While we recognize it can be difficult, we encourage you to take a few minutes each day to check in with yourself, recognize your needs, and most importantly, breathe.

Mindfulness is a practice that can help relax and soothe. Follow the tips below from Mindful.org and remember to be good to yourself, too.

1. Set aside some time. You don’t need a meditation cushion, bench1, or any sort of special equipment to access your mindfulness skills—but you do need to set aside some time and space, even if it’s a few minutes a day.

2. Observe the present moment as it is. The aim of mindfulness is not quieting the mind or attempting to achieve a state of eternal calm. The goal is simple: we’re aiming to pay attention to the present moment, without judgment. Easier said than done, we know.

3. Let your judgments roll by. When we notice judgments arise during our practice, we can make a mental note of them, and let them pass.

4. Return to observing the present moment as it is. Our minds often get carried away in thought. That’s why mindfulness is the practice of returning, again and again, to the present moment.

5. Be kind to your wandering mind. Don’t judge yourself for whatever thoughts crop up, just practice recognizing when your mind has wandered off, and gently bring it back.

Those were the Days
Send us your photos so we can enjoy the nostalgia while we spend time at home.
" This place was across from city Hall. My friends and I would often walk down there just to get an ice cream cone when we were about 9 or 10, and walk back eating it. I always got orange sherbet."

Hi I'm Deborah!

As Coordinator for the Dementia Friendly Communities program at ASHPE, I work with organizations and enterprises throughout the region who are looking at how to better meet the needs of individuals living with dementia and their care partners. A key first step is offering training for staff and volunteers who are working with the public in how to be more dementia aware. Our free workshops equip participants with strategies to enhance communication and problem solving skills when connecting with individuals living with dementia. To date we have offered this training to municipal staff, banking and financial services staff, recreation and sports facility staff, bus drivers, first responders and more.

Interested in learning more about our Dementia Friendly Communities initiative and how you can be involved? Reach out to me at Deborah.Hierlihy@alzheimerhpe.ca
My Hobbies
I enjoy many of the “domestic arts” from knitting and rug hooking to sewing and quilting and baking in the winter months. When the warm weather hits though, I want to be working in the garden or planning a road trip!
My Favourite Movie
Okay, I admit, The Sound of Music warms my heart every time I see it! This was the first movie I remember going to see as a young girl with my mother and sisters.
What I'm Reading
I am currently reading Anne Bokma’s My Year of Living Spiritually: From Woo-Woo to Wonderful, One Woman’s Secular Quest for a More Soulful Life (Douglas & McIntyre, 2019)
My Mood Boosting Quarantine Recipe
I am sharing my favourite brownie recipe with you from Oh She Glows. Guaranteed mood altering. In fact, I challenge you to show me a brownie recipe that is more delicious than this one...
My Favourite TV Shows
I find Working Moms laugh out loud funny (CBC and on CBC Gem). Best if watched beginning with season 1. I also enjoy many of the British detective shows such as Shetland and Midsomer Murder.
Come back next week to learn more about another ASHPE staff member!
