2 Corinthians 8:1 We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; 2 for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means, 4 begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry to the saints-- 5 and this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us, 6 so that we might urge Titus that, as he had already made a beginning, so he should also complete this generous undertaking among you. 7 Now as you excel in everything-- in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you-- so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. 8 I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. 9 For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.

Dear Friends,

Courageous Service. Extravagant Hospitality. Transformational Worship. Compassionate Justice. Those are the first four core values in our series on trying on for size what Council has discerned. This coming Sunday we look at Joyful Generosity.  Generosity is a way of seeing life. It sees abundance in all things. There may be limits to any one thing, but there is always more than enough. It sees all things are God's things, and that God gives us the privilege to enjoy them. And we're not just talking about material things and money. We are given 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week, and approximately 698,880 hours in a lifetime. We are given the gifts of abilities to use and share, along with stewarding ideas with others. It all belongs to God, but God wants us to make the most of all of it. Why would we ever want to share these? Because we have come to know grace. Grace is hidden in the above passage at least four times, plus the one time Paul actually named it as such. I'll share those other places we find grace in this passage. We can see that the Macedonians, who were not nearly as wealthy as Corinthians, nonetheless found joy in giving- even beyond their means.

Joyful generosity is one of God's core values. God joyfully and generously gives abundant grace to us. John 1 describes it as grace upon grace. God lavishes us with all we need, and then some. I look forward to celebrating this with you Sunday.

We pray: Creator, thank you. In your abundant grace we find your joy. Make our joy complete by stirring us to share all you have given us to use. Amen.

Pastor Jim

We Need Your Gifts!

Coming soon, you will receive an email from Rejoice asking you/your family to lend a hand with Sunday worship: greeters, hospitality and communion assistants. It’s easy, takes little time, and connects you with others folks. Blessings!
Synod Sermons

Our Synod office will offer a weekly virtual sermon written and preached by one of the Synod Ministers, Bishop Jon, or Bishop Elect Dee Pederson through the end of August. There will be no bulletins or hymn suggestions paired with these sermons. They are simply there for us to watch and enjoy as we spend our summer worshiping God and celebrating his mission for us in this world.
Vacation and Communion

Pastor Jim will be on vacation July 19-25. Holy Communion will be offered this Sunday, July 18. There will be no communion on July 25.

Open Your Heart this Summer

Open Your Heart Summer Challenge runs for the month of July. The challenge aims to boost food shelves in Minnesota when they need it most. During the summer months, food shelf donations are traditionally low. For the thousands of Minnesota families that rely on free breakfast and lunch programs during the school year, the summer makes it difficult for them to secure food. In partnership with Hunger Solutions, Open Your Heart’s Summer Challenge makes it possible for Minnesota food shelves to restock and distribute fresh and frozen foods during this difficult time of year. Please consider making a donation to the Food Shelf in July.
