Mark 9:2-9

2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!" 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

If Jesus taught his disciples that the good news of God's Kingdom had arrived, and once sent them out to proclaim this good news, why does he now order them to tell no one of the mountaintop sights and sounds until after he had risen from the dead? The command to secrecy is common throughout Good News According to Mark. I call your attention to these occasions as we move through Mark this year. I will address these during Holy Week.

But for this week, we focus on those sights and sounds of Jesus' transfiguration. They know what they saw. They know what they heard. I hope we can experience a bit of their sights and sounds to understand the story that unfolds during Lent.

We pray, Heavenly Father, help us to hear your Son, Jesus. Help us to set aside our preconceived notions that inform the sights and sounds of our own connections with you, that we may grow in your true ways, and proclaim in sights and sounds what is truly Good News. Amen.

Hope you join us Sunday, either in person or online. God's richest mercies be with you,

Pastor Jim
