Luke 12:32-40

[Jesus said:] 32“Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
35“Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 37Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.
39“But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”

"What's in your wallet?" Sound familiar? Ten bonus points if you can name the company that advertises this. Jesus says "Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out..." What all is in our purses that that wears them out? Or, what material is used to make purse that won't wear out? What all did Jesus mean?

And what is an "unfailing treasure"? Have you ever reached a point in life where the things you thought mattered most no longer hold value? Maybe it was an all-consuming job or trying to keep everyone else happy at your own personal emotional expense. I find August to be a great month for self-reflection. A little more time for sitting on the deck or around the fire with our thoughts? Approaching a new school year and wanting to shuffle priorities for the upcoming year?

I hope you can join us Sunday to marinate in God's love as Jesus lures us into a deeper, more meaningful life, carried by the purse that doesn't wear out. Maybe it's a chance to empty that purse and start over. What is for certain is God's love never wears out. Hearts that make God's love a top treasure will always find joy in the life we have- not the life we wish we had. He beckons to us to make the most of it.

We will have a noisy offering Sunday for our Vacation Bible School expenses. As of this writing, we have 14 children registered. Partner with us in making a difference in the lives of children and their families.

We pray: God of Grace and Love, help us examine what's in our wallets and replace those items that draw us away from the lasting joy you have in store for us. Amen.

Pastor Jim
