John 2:1-11

1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

The average cost of a wedding in Minnesota is now $28,800. We all have been to weddings that surely cost way more than that- especially destination weddings. In Cana, Jesus was there. The Son of God, with them. He had not yet been revealed to them. Kinda awkward. Making it even more awkward was Jesus' mother manipulating him into performing his first public miracle. Running out of wine at a Jewish wedding those days is also very awkward, if not totally embarrassing. Sometimes in life we totally focus on those things that are peripheral to what is most important. Wedding or marriage? Anything to avoid looking cheap or foolish? Avoiding embarrassment in the eyes of others? This wedding miracle is about something much deeper called abundant grace and abundant living. The one who turns water into award-winning wine want to fill our lives to the brim with a love that wills us to joyful, abundant, meaningful life. All we need to do is drink.

We pray: God of Miracles and Signs, wash over us with your water and turn us into a fine wine. Direct our paths to what matters most in life, casting aside those peripheral things that block our ability to find true joy. Amen.

Land Purchase Agreement

The Rejoice Lutheran Exploratory Committee and the Clearwater-Clear Lake Food Shelf have agreed to a land purchase Agreement in Principle. This non-binding agreement is approved by the Rejoice Lutheran Church Council with an asking price of $78,000 for the 1.0 acre lot.

During the February 6th Annual Meeting of Rejoice Lutheran Church, a vote will be presented to the church membership for approval of the land sale.

Documents and further information can be obtained on the Rejoice Lutheran website, February Newsletter, and in print available at the church building.

There will be two information sessions after Sunday church services on January 23rd and January 30th, at approximately 10:30am. This will be an opportunity to hear further information and ask questions.

What will the money be used for?
  • Since this money is coming from the sale of land and affects our capital worth, we would recommend that we invest the money into a savings account with an Investment Fund. This type of fund allows us to grow funds for capital projects.
  • This fund would allow us to pay the monthly mortgage if funds are short. This fund could also be used for building maintenance and projects as they occur.
Annual Meeting

  • Sunday, February 6
  • Following worship service
