Romans 12:11 Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.

Friends, sermon topics for the next three Sundays will be a little lighter than normal. I am having another series on D.O.G. Depend on God. There will be a pet blessing after worship on October 3, the last Sunday of the series. That is also St. Francis of Assisi week, whose pet blessing we will use.

For this coming Sunday, what does God, a dog tail, and Romans 12:11 have in common? You wag what you got! Hope to see you Sunday.

We pray: Dear God, teach us to rely on you as our dogs rely on us. Cause us to love you back like they love us back. Amen

Pastor Jim
Confirmation

Confirmation will start soon! This year, we’re using Colaborate: Lutheran Confirmation to we discover the richness of Lutheran history, the Small Catechism, as well as the Old and New Testaments. First night is September 22, 6:15-7 pm.

Contact us to sign your child up, or go to rejoicelutheranchurch.org, click on "menu", then "forms", and you will find a form to complete.

Have you ever been stumped by a faith question? Join us for Colaborate: Lutheran Confirmation as we explore those questions together. Have you ever thought to yourself “If we follow Jesus, why do we call ourselves Lutheran?” Or “I don’t understand how Jesus could be fully human and fully divine.” To help answer these questions, our confirmands will be using Colaborate: Lutheran Confirmation as a way of learning, as opposed to lecture/small group.

Noisy Offering for Clearview Backpack Program

It’s once again time to think about re-stocking the shelves for the weekend food backpack program at Clearview Elementary School! We will hold a food and fund drive to support the program on Sunday, September 26. Please bring non-perishable, kid-friendly items such as single-serving mac and cheese, soup and pasta cans with pull tops, single serving fruit cups or pudding, or instant oatmeal in single-serving packets. Your noisy (and not so noisy!) offering will also help kick-start the program this fall. The backpack program started in fall 2016 and last school year we provided breakfast, lunch and snack items to 5 families/14 children on the weekend when school meals are not available.

When asked what they thought of the backpack program. Here’s what some of the kids had to say:
  • "I really like them! They are a little heavy though." - Veronica - age 9
  • "I like to bring the backpack home. The food is good!" - Vincent - age 11
  • "I like everything about the backpack." - Brayden - age 6
  • "The only thing I don't like about the backpacks are that they are a little too heavy, but I love the food!" - Angel - age 8

Thank you for your generosity with food and funds in support of the backpack program on Sunday, September 26!

An Orange Banner in Remembrance of the Children
The American Indian Alaskan Native Lutheran Association (AIANLA) of the ELCA asks us to mourn with them the 215+ Indigenous children whose bodies were recently discovered in a mass grave in Canada.

In solidarity, an orange banner will hang in our church sanctuary for the next 225 days. A day for each child. Participate at home by placing this slip of paper or an orange cloth in a place of honor, in lament.

Inspired by Phyllis Jack Webstad who, at age 6, arrived at a residential boarding school wearing a gift from her grandmother–– a new orange t-shirt. Stripped, her new shirt taken away, the color symbolizes how they were stripped, too, of their Indigenous identity. An author and activist, read her story online.

From our library, read Kent Nerburn’s account as he takes you on ‘forgotten roads with an Indian Elder’ in his book Neither Wolf Nor Dog. Continue the journey with The Wolf at Twilight. Not in our library, I also recommend 2021 Pulitzer Prize winning author Louise Erdrich. She and Nerburn are from MN.
