Blast from the Past
On November 18, 1926, when the Spring Grove State Bank's lone cashier, Floyd Foss, had just locked the vault, two strangers walked in and forced him to the floor. George Nelson and his cohort took the keys, unlocked the vault, stole a bundle of cash and locked Floyd in the vault (or so they thought). Luckily, he got out, and yelled that the bank had just been robbed. Locals Paul Weber and Victor Siegler tracked them to the Fox Lake train station where they surrendered. No, George Nelson was not the famous Baby Face Nelson, the notorious bank robber of the time, just a down-on-his-luck guy who served seven years in the Joliet State Penitentiary for the crime. The bank succumbed to the Depression in 1931 and the building later housed a manufacturing business, a sandwich shop run by Shirley Dawson, the Spring Grove Post Office, and since 1993, the Law Office's of Neil Anderson. But take a look next time and you'll see the Spring Grove State Bank sign still etched in stone over the front door.
