Blast from the Past
Circa 1925 photo of Ellen Cole Baker (on drums). Ellen's mother was Anna Cole Baker who's father was Franklin Cole, an early pioneer who came here in 1838 and became one of the wealthiest farmers in Spring Grove. His white-pillared house still stands at the NW corner of Wilmot Road and Main Street. When he died, he left Anna a "great fortune". Anna invested her money in a new venture making perfume from the Lotus flowers which grew in Grass Lake. Unfortunately, the Chicago-based business failed and Anna committed suicide on the shore of Lake Michigan in 1916, shooting herself three times. A note she left behind stated in part, "Be kind to Ellen". Ellen died in 1974 and is buried by her mother in Cole Cemetery on Wilmot Road.
