Blast from the Past
In the early 1900s, the Vogler-Schillo Pickle Factory stood on Hatchery Road close to the Hatchery Park entrance by the train tracks. Families grew pickles in their gardens to sell to the factory to earn extra money. The smallest pickles brought the best price as they were the hardest to find in the garden! A dozen huge pickling vats inside the factory had white briny white foam that collected on top of the water. Children liked to walk around the vats but they would never want to fall in one! Pickles were scooped out of the tanks with fishnets and shipped to Chicago in small tanks on a flat railroad car to sell to city folks.
