You Do Not Have to Earn Your Place

Sometimes, the hardest thing to believe is that we are allowed to simply take up space. So, we try to earn it.

We give more than was asked.

We say yes when we mean no.

We become the dependable one.

The easy one.

The one who never disappoints or makes things harder.

From the outside, it may look like generosity or commitment. Underneath, it can be a quiet hope:

If I do enough, give enough, or prove enough, perhaps I will be valued. Perhaps I will belong.

Our minds and nervous systems learn from experience. When love, approval, or safety once felt connected to what we produced or provided, overgiving can become a pattern of protection. And that is why it can hurt so deeply when our effort is not recognized or returned.

It was never only about what we gave. It was also about securing a place we were not sure would be offered freely. But here is the gentler truth:

You do not have to buy your way into belonging.

The people worth being close to were never asking you to earn your way in. And the workplaces worth strengthening should not require you to abandon yourself to prove your value. This matters in leadership, too.

When leaders believe their worth depends on being endlessly available, carrying everything, or never needing anything, they model the same pressure for others. Over time, people-pleasing becomes resentment. Commitment becomes exhaustion. Performance replaces humanity.

Human-centered leadership begins within—with the human being underneath the title. It asks us to hold compassion and accountability together. To notice the patterns driving our behavior. To create boundaries without guilt. To choose from clarity rather than fear.

When you notice yourself overgiving, try a Breaking Through Moment:

  1. STOP: Pause before automatically saying yes.
  2. NOTICE: What are you feeling in your mind and body?
  3. NAME: Am I choosing this—or trying to earn approval?
  4. CHOOSE: What response honors both my values and my capacity?
  5. LEAD: Communicate your decision with clarity and ownership.

Personal Love reminds us that we are worthy before we perform.

Purpose reminds us what deserves our energy.

A Positive Mindset reminds us that awareness creates choice.

You are allowed to have needs.

You are allowed to set boundaries.

You are allowed to take up space.

You are already worthy of belonging.

If you are exhausted from proving, pleasing, performing, or perfecting, reply to this email or schedule a confidential conversation. Let’s uncover the pattern—and create a more human way forward.

With personal love and purpose,
