Reminder: Yourist Studio Gallery is seeking experienced ceramics instructors to join our teaching staff. We are looking for a combination of class instructors to help enhance the skills of our student population. We have openings for
-
ceramicists to teach hand-building techniques to beginning and advanced level students;
-
potters to teach introductory wheel;
-
advanced class instructors who incorporate multiple building and finishing techniques in their syllabus.
If you have experience and are interested in working with the students and staff at the new Yourist Studio Gallery facility, please submit your resume and a collection of 5-10 images of your work to Kay Yourist.

Don't say goodbye...
...to your March pieces remaining on our shelves. On April 30, we will free our shelves of all the bisque and glaze ware that has accumulated there in March.
-
Please pick up your glazed pieces and take them home to enjoy.
-
Please glaze your bisque ware now or take it home for glazing in the future.
Regrettably, any unclaimed bisque ware and glazed pieces remaining after that date must be discarded to open up space for new work.

Masking update
The CDC has lifted the universal masking advisory for communities where the risk of transmission is low or medium as determined by the CDC. The COVID-19 community transmission level risk is currently low in Washtenaw County. Please see the prevention steps the CDC advises for communities at low risk on its COVID by County page to gauge whether you should wear a mask at the studio. As the situation is fluid, you can visit this Washtenaw County Health Department page to check current transmission risk and case numbers in the county. The studio will operate in accordance with the latest CDC advisories. We thank you for helping us keep our studio safe and healthy for all students and members.

Q. You recently featured a video that included a segment showing a potter using layers of different colored slip to slip cast a pot. The potter then carved the piece to reveal the different colors. Is there any way to achieve this effect other than slip casting?
A. Would you be surprised to learn that Ann Ruel of Little Street Pottery asked herself that very question? She tried three experiments with slips and underglazes to achieve the layered effect. You can see her results in this video.
Follow-up: So what do you do with all the little clay scraps you generate from carving? Check out this new video to see some clever ideas from Ann.
This video is part of our continuing series for beginners at all levels.

That's a fancy term for "eating insects," the theme of the International Museum of Dinnerware Design's call for entries for its Fifth Biennial Juried Exhibition. The entry deadline is January 31, 2023, so you have plenty to time to get ready.

Speaking of layers of color, learn how potter Jane Scott creates fake black clay with slip, then watch as she builds up layers of color on it using underglazes. By doing so, she gets the effect of black clay without its sometimes problematic behavior. Be on the lookout for appearances by adorable Bertie, the studio dog, who shamelessly upstages Scott.

This video from Ondo Studio uses both throwing and hand building to construct a partitioned plate with immaculate craftsmanship and design. You might think, until mid-video, that you know how this plate will turn out, but this is no standard chip-and-dip plate. (In fact, it might be the perfect plate for kids—and other people—who don't like their food touching.)
Hand builders, you can make this plate, too. Just create the wheel-thrown pieces using your hand-building techniques instead.

Watch Tim See, the "best potter in the world," make the "best mug in the world." Warning: You probably shouldn't be consuming coffee or other beverages as you view this video. For the serious side of Tim See, see here.
Oh, and don't miss Amaco's promotion for its new Mood Glaze Technology, which will undoubtedly contribute to making the world a better place.
