Overcrowding alert!
Our bisqueware shelves will soon be overflowing. If you have bisqueware on our shelves that was fired in December, it's time to glaze it or pick it up and take it home by Saturday, February 1 .

Sadly, we must discard any unclaimed December bisqueware remaining after February 1.
Ready, load, fire!
Here's the tentative schedule for our February gas kiln firing:

Loading : Tuesday, February 18
Firing : Wednesday, February 19
Unloading: Friday, February 21

Remember, the February firing will occur when we have accumulated enough pieces to fill the kiln, so start glazing now. Be sure to check with the studio for February firing schedule updates.
Tool Time is back!
Our next Tool Time demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, February 22, at 3:00 pm . Kay will show you how to deal with the challenges of throwing a platter. There's no need to register in advance. Just drop by the studio to see this demonstration, which is free and open to the public .

If you have topics you'd like Kay to cover, please get in touch . We're interested in hearing from you.
Potter's quick tip
Q. As a beginner, I struggle with glazing and am often disappointed with my results. What can I do to improve my glazing?

A . We suggest reviewing the basics of glazing from A to Z in this comprehensive video from Karen Witham-Walsh , a professional potter and 25-year high school ceramics instructor. She shows how to dip, pour, and brush on glazes for the best results. Witham-Walsh made this video for her students, so it does contain a few unobtrusive references to her classroom process. Just be aware that our studio glazes are not formulated for brushing, but Witham-Walsh's brushing instructions do apply to brushable commercial glazes.

This video is part of our continuing series for beginners (but is helpful to anyone who finds glazing a challenge).

Resources for potters
All about underglazes
Underglazes have been a topic of interest around the studio lately, so we're featuring this excellent tutorial from Miss Linnea Lark , who bills herself as an "auntie, potter, teacher and artist." Her video is a "step-by-step guide to using underglazes to add an illustrative design to your ceramics." She demonstrates "how to create solid, opaque images as well as how to create watercolor techniques using underglazes." She also provides lots of helpful answers to viewers' questions in the comments section.
Bonus video!
Welcome to the second episode of The Great Pottery Throw Down . Potters are challenged to hand build a chess set that expresses their personality, as well as to throw small à la master potter, Geoffrey Swindell . (See a collection of his tiny pots here .) Plus, Keith has nearly everyone in tears in this episode.
