When students show up, opportunity follows. When they don’t, the consequences extend far beyond the classroom. More than 9 million students nationwide are chronically absent, affecting academic achievement, graduation rates, workforce readiness, and long-term community outcomes. Attendance shapes whether students are positioned to succeed, making it a shared responsibility across schools, families, and communities.
A new report released by the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations, made possible by the Helios Education Foundation, draws on more than 500 research sources and national experts to examine what truly improves student attendance. The findings are clear:
- Research alone does not improve attendance. Impact depends on how effectively schools and communities translate evidence into action through coordinated, collective effort.
- Chronic absenteeism is often a symptom of broader challenges, including health, housing, transportation, and family stress. Schools cannot address these barriers alone.
- The pandemic reshaped how families engage with school. Successful approaches focus on rebuilding trust and ensuring school feels meaningful and relevant for families across all socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Efforts are most effective when families and communities help shape solutions. Approaches done with families are more impactful than those imposed from the top down.
- For school districts, strong implementation and continuous improvement matter more than selecting the “right” program. Ongoing data review and follow-through drive sustainable results.
