The Diocesan Youth Council is a group of young people who represent the youth of the Diocese at Diocesan Convention. They plan and run Diocesan youth events and work to make the church a nurturing environment for the spiritual growth of young people in our Christian community. They seek to accomplish this through extending fellowship and hospitality with their fellow youth.
Applications due THIS FRIDAY, August 23, 2019.
Our borderlands missioners return

Members of the Diocesan delegation look towards the United States from the Mexican side of "the wall," as they listen to the Rev. Rodger Babnew, Jr. of Cruzando Fronteras tell about Jose' Antonio Elena Rodriguez, a 16-year old Mexican killed by gunfire shot through the wall by a US Border Patrol agent standing on the US side. The group is standing on the spot in Mexico from which Jose' was throwing rocks at the agent. The wall is seen in the distance, on the hill.
Seven young people and their three adult companions returned last Friday, Aug. 16, from a weeklong mission to the US/Mexico borderlands region in and around Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora. While there, the pilgrims left water and clean socks in the desert along the migrant trail, meet with Border Patrol agents, observed a "streamlined" immigration court proceedings, and spent time in two shelters for asylum-seekers awaiting their asylum interview. They also learned about the region's cultural history.

The trip was organized by the Office of Youth Ministry, in partnership with the Diocese of Arizona and their borderlands mission, Cruzando Fronteras.

For more on the trip, including the missioners' final reflections, check out their trip blog .

Those who want to support the trip are welcome to make a donation directly to the diocese , by check or on-line.
The Office of Youth Ministry has already begun to organize a similar trip for August 2020. Those interested in more information should contact the Rev. H.. Mark Smith .

Resources for Youth Ministry
a weekly Bible study to engage youth and young adults in connecting world events with the Bible, faith, and everyday life

Every week during the academic year, our colleagues at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America publish a lesson plan based on the weekly lectionary readings and connecting the themes of those lessons with the events and issues our young people are dealing with each and every day.

Some weeks the connection is to a specific event, such as the fire last spring in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. Other weeks, broader issues, such as climate change, gun violence, and rebuilding efforts in Iraq, are the focus. Always, the lessons encourage participants to look at scripture through the lens of our daily life--and to consider our daily lives with the help of scripture.

Each lesson includes a warm-up question, a story for context, discussion questions, links to the lectionary texts, a study of the Gospel lesson, suggested activities, and even a link to a weekly comic strip based on the readings. Many include links to YouTube videos and other resources to supplement the lesson.

The lessons are designed to be suggestive rather than prescriptive, yet detailed enough to not require extensive preparation ahead of the lesson. Definitely worth checking out--or have some of your young people check out some of last year's postings , and advise you on whether they feel the lessons appropriate and relevant to your group.
Please note: The unsubscribe link below will remove you automatically from other diocesan mailing lists. If you would like to be removed from the Youth Ministry News distribution, but continue to receive other communications, please e-mail the Rev. H. Mark Smith.
