At a recent event, participants were asked what their church had stopped doing over the last couple of decades. The first three responses were Sunday School VBS, and Bible Studies. In others words,
faith formation. It's no wonder then that their first response to what loss they feel in the church was "children and youth."
Faith formation is critical. And it's not about retaining children and youth - it's about giving the tools and foundation for young people to live a life of faith every day. To live free and abundantly in a world that speaks fear and scarcity. To live with love and hope in a world that is filled with hatred and despair.
The faithful work you do day in and day out to cultivate the soil in which faith is nurtured makes a difference. This is the work to which we are called and to which every person in a congregation promises to live out when a child (or adult!) is baptized... that we will speak, live, teach and nurture a foundation of faith. All of us, not just the youth director and pastor. Why? So that our children might trust God, share Christ, care for others and the world, and work for justice and peace.
We have a high calling! You are in my prayers this program year as you seek to strengthen faith formation in your congregations for the sake of our youth and adults...and our world!

The Synod Journey
to the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering!

Registration opens September 18th!
Some helpful reminders as you prepare to register:
- If you are coming on the Synod Journey, DO NOT register with the ELCA Youth Gathering! We take care of that for you!
- Registration opens September 18th (post-marked) and closes September 25th. We encourage congregations to postmark their material September 18th.
There are two parts to registration:
- Online Forms: Links will open September 1st to enter participant information and housing requests. Worksheets are available to help you collect the information needed for online forms.
- Printed Forms: Beginning September 18th, mail your Group Registration Form, Participant Covenant, and Adult Leader Covenant with your deposit check ($250 per person, non-refundable).
Your registration is not complete until all Online Forms, Printed Forms and full deposit have been received! Click here for all forms.
Fall Adult Leader Trainings!
Adult leaders on the Synod Journey are required to attend a Fall Training event, to help prepare you and your group for this rich and meaningful faith experience!

You know faith formation is critical. And you know confirmation holds a significant seat at that table. But what strategies bear the most fruit in this changing culture? What can we learn from the latest research and each other, for the sake of faith formation in our young people? Join us for presentations from The Confirmation Project research and discussion on how this research can inform our approach to faith formation in the congregation.
