Interview Tip of the Month
It’s 15 minutes before the big job interview you’ve been preparing for. What do you do?
- Stay calm and don’t overthink it. Stress greatly inhibits your ability to think clearly, something you definitely want to be able to do during an interview in order to answer questions to the very best of your ability.
- Nothing will shake you more than running late to an interview, so always arrive early. Not too early though, that might be seen as an imposition – 10 minutes before your interview is usually the perfect time to head inside. If you’re more than 10 minutes early, hang out in your car for a few minutes before heading inside.
- Be friendly to everyone at the front desk. It’s highly likely the receptionist will report back to the hiring manager, so it’s important to be friendly with everyone. Plus, if you are hired, you will have wanted to start off with your new coworkers on the right foot… first impressions matter!
- Stop rehearsing. Over-prepared responses come across as disingenuous and scripted. You already know your stuff, so treat the interview more as a conversation than a test. Authenticity will fare much better than a robotic response.
- Decide on one or two things you want to be remembered for. While it’s important to demonstrate your knowledge and qualifications for the position you’re interviewing for, honing in on a few key traits will better help you to stand out as memorable.
- Remember your posture. You’ll demonstrate your confidence and professionalism sitting in a power pose as you wait to go into your interview much more than you would sitting slouched down in your seat.
- Don’t check your phone. You never know what you will see or hear that may break your focus and send you into the interview with something other than the job on your mind. Depending on the office environment, it may also come across as rude or unprofessional.
- Review your notes, but don’t do any more research. At this point, you should already be done preparing and rehearsing; any new information you come across during this very short time period allows for misinterpretation so it’s best to stick to what you’ve already learned. If you’ve made any notes for yourself however, now is the best time to review them.
- Look in a mirror. Duck into the restroom to take a final look in the mirror and wash your hands. A presentable appearance and clean, dry hands are crucial to a great first impression – you don’t want to be remembered for sweaty palms!
- Think happy thoughts. Thinking of pleasant things will not only put you in a great state of mind going in to the interview, but will also ensure you go in with a genuine smile and sense of excitement.
