YJC October 2022 Newsletter
Automotive 101 at Olive-Harvey College

Our Automotive 101 program at Olive-Harvey College is back! Our second cohort of automotive clients began their classes on Monday, October 24th. We have 11 clients who are eager to start their automotive career path.

During their 8-week training program, clients will learn the ins and outs of auto maintenance and technology in a classroom and hands-on setting. Once they complete their classes, clients will leave with three industry-recognized automotive certifications and have access to a paid work experience with a local automotive employer.

YJC provides all clients with Workforce Readiness Training, individualized career coaching, employment support, and financial services during and after their training program.

Save the Date - Giving Tuesday is on November 29th, 2022

Your support this Giving Tuesday will ensure that our clients continue to find success in the workplace - and in life. Your gift provides young people throughout Chicagoland access to Workforce Readiness Training, personalized career coaching, job placement, financial coaching, and ongoing barrier reduction services.

Donate on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, and create a personalized donation page to fundraise on behalf of YJC. Every dollar raised on Giving Tuesday will be matched up to $15,000. If you are interested in hosting your own fundraiser, we will supply all the information you need for it to be a success!

In-Person Job Fairs are Back!

This past Saturday, we hosted our first in-person job fair since the COVID-19 pandemic began! Jewel-Osco and Walgreens joined us at our Englewood office for the onsite hiring event geared toward our high school clients living on the South side. Clients completed Workforce Readiness Training before the event and showed up ready to impress!

Nearly 60 clients joined us for on-the-spot interviews with our employer partners. In the coming weeks, our staff will follow up with clients and employers to see who has landed the job. Clients still looking for employment are encouraged to continue to join Workforce Readiness Training for additional support.

Our next in-person job fair will be on Saturday, October 29th, at the Robert Crown Center in Evanston. Employer partners include Chick-fil-A, Marshalls, Old Navy, and Ross Dress for Less. We can't wait to see the turnout!

Giving Tuesday is coming up! Sign up for our peer-to-peer fundraiser.
Client of the Month

Jaden is a highly motivated 22-year old who was referred to YJC through our partnership with Chicago CRED. Jaden knew he wanted to pursue a career where he could work with his hands and that our Automotive 101 program with Olive-Harvey College was perfect for him! When classes began, Jaden dove right into the work.

Jaden has excellent communication skills and asked tons of great questions that allowed him to fully understand the automotive field and help him excel in his future work. In addition, Jaden made sure he arrived to every class on time. Jaden completed his training program and received his automotive certification. After completing the program, Jaden transitioned into a 10-week paid work experience with Ridge Auto Service, where he could take the knowledge he learned in the classroom and apply it to real-world situations.

Jaden’s Career Advisor shares that watching him grow into the man he is destined to be was exhilarating. Keep up the great work, and you will be working full-time in the auto field in no time!

Meet the YJC Team

Meet Claire! Claire joined YJC earlier this year as our Grants Manager. As a member of our Development team, she is responsible for researching, writing, and preparing materials for our grant applications. Claire is a skilled writer and joined YJC so she can use her talent to make a difference. She believes that all young people should receive the support and resources needed to thrive at work before joining the workforce. Since joining YJC, Claire has helped secure grants from new organizations, and built upon previous relationships, to ensure we can continue moving our mission forward.

The key piece of advice Claire would give young people is: to learn as much as possible about the things you are passionate about, and to meet and learn from people who are successfully doing the work you want to do. Since joining the workforce, Claire has learned that having a network of supporters, a supportive supervisor, and passionate colleagues (like the ones at YJC!) makes the work you do far more satisfactory. When Claire isn’t busy writing our grants, she likes to work on her writing, read, and cook. She’s also busy training the new addition to her family, her dachshund puppy, Rudy!
