Today's scripture passage:
Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT):
"Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
What's a yoke?
On the right is a picture of a yoke and some oxen. The yoke is what attaches a pair of working animals to a plow or cart and have been used for thousands of years, including biblical times!
How is a yoke easy?
So, if a yoke is placed on your back and used to pull a cart or plow, how can it be easy? And the words "burden" and "light" are opposites...

Jesus often used paradoxes to communicate truths about God that at face value may not seem to make sense, but when you take a deeper look they actually do!

When you decide to follow Jesus, you repent of your sins and commit to obeying God's commands. That might seem like a burden that is too heavy since we can't follow God perfectly. Or, you might be feeling the weight of past sins and mistakes. There also could be circumstances in your life that weigh heavily on you and make it hard to trust in God or follow Him well.

Lucky for us, God has infinite grace! We don't have to carry our burdens alone because we have Jesus! Because of God's grace through Jesus, the yoke of obeying God's commands is made easy. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are there to help us follow God well.

God also there for us when life weighs on us and we are weary. Jesus says that when we come to Him and bring Him our burdens, He comforts us and gives us rest.

This is such an amazing gift that we are called to share with others! How can we share the gift of Jesus' easy yoke with someone this week?
