Youth Mental Health First Aid is a 6-hour training that gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents (ages 6-18) who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.
Course Details:
Just as CPR helps those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a five-step action plan that guides them through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support:
- Assess for risk of suicide or harm
- Listen non-judgmentally
- Give reassurance and information
- Encourage appropriate professional help
- Encourage self-help and other support strategies
The training has been adapted to be delivered virtually during a 4-hour instructor-led Zoom training.
**A 2-hour, self-paced online class is required to participate in the 4-hour, virtual Instructor-led training. Information on the self-paced online class will be emailed after registration. **
