Prosphora Seal Symbolism
Thanks to parishioner Christina Herron, creator of
Orthodox Icon Friends

At the center is the Lamb—the square portion marked IC XC NIKA (“Jesus Christ Conquers”). This is the portion that becomes the Holy Body of Christ during the Divine Liturgy.

To the right of the Lamb is the triangle portion dedicated to the Theotokos, the Mother of God. This commemorates her unique role in God’s plan of salvation and her place at the right hand of Christ.

On the left are the particles commemorating the Nine Ranks. These honor the angels and saints who surround Christ in glory:

• The Angels

• Prophets

• Apostles

• Holy Hierarchs

• Martyrs

• Monastics and Ascetics

• Holy Unmercenaries

• Ancestors of God (such as Joachim and Anna) and the Saint of the Day

• The Saint whose Divine Liturgy is being celebrated

Together, these portions remind us that the Divine Liturgy is not something we attend alone. Heaven and earth are united as Christ is surrounded by His Mother, the angels, and all the saints.
Every detail of the prosphora seal tells the story of the Church gathered around Christ.
