WHAT A MONTH!
October was very busy at the New Mexico State Library and topped off by a great New Mexico Library Association conference in Albuquerque. It was great to see so many folks in person. It was inspiring to hear about all the great programming happening across the state. I was happy to present for two sessions with Brynn Cole on Connected Learning and Ages and Stages - and happy to hear lively discussions about making the best choices for our children and teens. The keynote speaker, Emily Drabinski, ALA President, said it best - Libraries Do Good Work.

For the next Book Club we will have a Genre Club.
This is a great way to host a club without having to buy multiple copies of the same book. Choose a Middle Grade or YA title within the theme to share with other attendees! Get your coffee and join us for an informal discussion about the book and it's appeal to our youth patrons.

The Land of Enchantment Book Awards at NMLA 2023

I had the privilege of co-presenting a program about the Land of Enchantment book awards at the NMLA conference last month. School Librarian Natasha Carty and I talked about different programming ideas and strategies that librarians can use to encourage students to read and vote for nominated books based on their young readers’ grade levels. We explained how the award program works and explored the nominated titles in each category. We also had a fun group brainstorming activity that resulted in so many great ideas shared by attendees. I’m happy to say that we had a successful turnout and each attendee received a canvas bag filled with nominated books to take home. We also had some giveaways of book club starter sets for Paletero Man, The Last Cuentista, Furia, and Falling Short, all courtesy of the New Mexico State Library.

The American Buffalo Educational Resources Available
WETA Washington, D.C., the American Indian Library Association (AILA), and PBS Books are pleased to announce a community engagement partnership around THE AMERICAN BUFFALO, a new two-part, four-hour film directed by Ken Burns. The documentary traces the near demise – and ultimate return – of the U.S. national mammal, while examining the species’ connection to Indigenous communities and the land.
Educational resources, including book lists and coloring sheets, are available at the PBS Books site. Additional teaching materials are available at the Ken Burns in the Classroom site.

The Early Literacy Calendar
incorporates the early literacy practices found in Every Child Ready to Read, and includes, rhymes, songs and book lists on the back.
You can download all months in English and Spanish from the Niche Academy course - here - and distribute to your patrons, or share on your library website or social media. I'm happy to report we'll be continuing this program for 2024!

PLA 2024 Conference Scholarships Available
to attend the PLA 2024 Conference, April 3-5, 2024, in Columbus, OH
Applications Due: November 12, 2023.
Fifty scholarships are available to cover conference registration fees and provide one year of PLA membership. Scholarships are available for both the in-person conference and the virtual conference. Persons who receive scholarships to attend the conference in-person will also receive a $750 stipend to help cover travel costs.

NMLF STEM INOVATION GRANT APPLICATION OPEN!
The deadline for applications is November 30, 2023.
Would your library like to develop or improve learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for your community? The New Mexico Library Foundation encourages New Mexico libraries and organizations collaborating with NM libraries to submit applications for the 2023 STEM Innovation Grant. The funding range is $3,000 - $5,000

Writing Contest for
New Mexico Students
The Leopold Writing Program invites students in grades 6-12 to participate in the 2024 Writing Contest with an original essay on their relationship with the ecological environment. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning essayists in three grade categories: 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12 Submissions are accepted through February 15, 2024.
