What is Candlemas?
On February 2nd we celebrate Candlemas, but what exactly is it?
Candlemas commemorates both the presentation of Jesus in the Temple in accordance with Jewish practices and the blessing of candles which were used in the church and in homes throughout the year. A recognition of this date as significant began in Jerusalem in the 4th century where candles were carried in procession, then blessed, lit, and distributed to the people, to symbolize bringing the light of Christ into the world.
Wondering how you might celebrate or honor Candlemas?
Light a candle or use a battery operated one.
Read Luke 2:22-40.
Wonder: where do you see God's light in the world? How can you help share that light in the world?
Pray: Lord, you now have set your servant free to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
