Yucca Valley Animal Shelter Update

This year the Yucca Valley Animal Shelter has made significant progress in executing Town Council direction by expanding community outreach, strengthening local partnerships and enhancing organizational development.

The shelter began the year hosting 11 adoption events and increasing promotion in the local newspaper, online platforms and radio ads featuring the popular “Pet of the Week” segment. These efforts raised awareness of the animal rescue need across the greater Yucca Valley community. As a result, pet adoptions increased by 21% for dogs and 44% for cats, providing 211 dogs and 90 cats with forever homes between January and September.

“The animal shelter has strengthened our community’s awareness for animal care this past year,” said Mayor Jeff Drozd. “Many of the lost and uncared-for animals in our community are going to safe and loving homes. This work could not be done without the diligent and resourceful employees of the Yucca Valley Animal Shelter.”

In addition, the shelter established an Animal Review Committee to support collaboration and ensure ongoing transparency and accountability in shelter operations. The committee’s formation, along with a recent operational review identified key opportunities for growth. Outcomes include increased animal care staffing, new and developing partnerships with local rescue groups, completed request for proposal for Supervising Veterinary Services, reduced adoption costs and the creation of specialized staff positions. One of the most appreciated initiatives launched this year is the successful delivery of no-cost spay/neuter events for Town residents. These events sold out quickly, and indicated the ongoing demand for future opportunities.

The shelter is currently in the process of recruiting for an Animal Care and Control (ACC) Manager. The role will provide new leadership and support for shelter operations and community services, and will be instrumental in continuing to deliver the priorities established by the Town Council.

“This is a transformational year for the shelter,” said Town Manager Curtis Yakimow. “We have not only increased our connection with the Yucca Valley community, but have also used this year to evaluate, modify and strengthen our shelter operations. While much work remains to be completed, it is important to recognize the successful work that has been done by the dedicated shelter staff and others. The Town looks forward to continuing these efforts in the upcoming months.”
