Essig Park will be undergoing some exciting updates in June and July of this year, made possible by the Town’s Measure Y quality of life funding.
Improvements will include:
Complete removal of the existing Dog Park turf and irrigation system
Installation of new efficient irrigation systems to decrease water use
Dog Park play features for the canine park users
Installation of new turf and selected trees
Concrete sidewalk and walkway installations
Installation of two shade structures with seating
Low level evening solar lighting
Park improvements are slated to begin on June 20, 2023, and are scheduled for completion by September 2023. The Dog Park will be closed during this time to complete the Project and allow for the new turf to be established prior to use.

First Annual Sgt. Vaca Football Tournament
This May, Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station hosted the first annual Sgt. Vaca football tournament, raising money for the Concerns of Police Survivors.
After an amazing day of football, community, and fun, the first annual Sgt. Vaca football tournament champs went to Palm Springs High School. The PSHS team graciously returned the trophy to runner ups, SBSD Victorville City, keeping the trophy within the department. Congratulations PSHS!
A huge thank you to our sponsors, the community groups who donated, and the teams who showed up to play some football. We're thankful for the amazing turnout to honor our hero Sgt. Vaca and raise money for Concerns of Police Survivors.
Since 1995, Yucca Valley’s Youth Commission has served their community by fostering the relationship between the Town’s young people and elected officials. Commissioners meet on a monthly basis to organize volunteer work for Town programs and a slate of intergenerational targeted activities, all while brainstorming creative outreach opportunities to reach students.
“My past experience as a chairman for the Town of Yucca Valley Youth Commission was a great opportunity,” said Ashley Lowe. “I started the meetings, held voting for the approval of work plans and gave out information with slides to the Youth Commission, stating when and where we can set up fun special events in the community.”
Every Fall through Spring, students grades 7 through 12 are eligible to serve on the Youth Commission, who are appointed on an annual basis to represent their class year. Students may apply to serve for multiple terms. At the end of the school year, activity reports are presented to the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Commission and a final report is given to the Town Council.
As families experience this interactive exhibit together, both children and adults will come to understand how what may appear to be magic can be explained through principles of math or science.
There is so much fun to be had! Abracadabra! Everyday Magic will be on display June 2 through August 12, 2023.
The Town of Yucca Valley is thrilled to announce the success of the annual Grubstakes 5/10K Run and 2K Walk, a highly anticipated event that drew nearly 80 running enthusiasts from far and wide.
We extend appreciation to media sponsors High Desert Star, Z107.7, as well as Citizens on Patrol staff, Youth Commission volunteers, and the entire community for their unwavering support and contributions. The success of the Grubstakes Run is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the event organizers, volunteers, law enforcement officers and Yucca-Valley High School.
The Recreation Department is delighted to congratulate the top three male and female participants in both the 5K and 10K races:
The Town of Yucca Valley, more than any other community in the state, values the integration of the desert environment, including the Joshua Tree and other unique desert plants, into our continued development as a community. As evidenced by our Town logo, as well as our General Plan Vision and Values, the desert environment is woven into the fabric of this community.
At the April 18 Town Council meeting, the Yucca Valley Town Council acted to formally oppose the proposed Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act (WJCTA) Trailer Bill on procedural grounds.
If passed, this bill would provide for the conservation of the Western Joshua Tree at a landscape scale, while establishing a permitting and mitigation framework based on template permits and payment of mitigation fees. More simply, the bill would provide restrictive protections for the Western Joshua Tree, and potentially future species, through a state budget process that does not consider the impacts of such actions on both public and private property within the Town of Yucca Valley. This will result in new mitigation and permitting costs for ANY public or private property owner in the Town of Yucca Valley that might need to relocate or remove ANY Western Joshua Tree from their property.
According to Town Manager Curtis Yakimow, “with regard to either the WJTCA or the petition before the Fish and Game Commission, to place significant conservation requirements and fees onto Yucca Valley property owners without a scientific basis, and prior to governmental agencies attempting to collaborate and cooperate in implementing effective conservation efforts, is neither good public policy nor good governance.”
